Help connect Harlow

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Harlow’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route

The first half of the route runs through Harlow but, apart from the short stretch around the bus station, is not at all urban being mostly through green areas and some low rise suburban residential streets. You are walking into oncoming traffic on a nominal pavement which is a white line painted on the road about a foot from a wall in places and it is hard to see traffic coming as it is obscured by the wall. When you reach the High Street in Epping there are plenty of places to get food and drink but not when you get to the underground station at the end of the route (there is sometimes a kiosk open)....

Excellent route alongside River Stort. It can become a bit muddy from the last lock, just before the end. It is possible to cycle it, although there are one or two stiles to lift your bike over...

There is then a section through the town, with some parks in between that were rather busy on my sunny day....

Instead continue on down Conduit Lane and there are traffic lights to cross the same road and then turn right to return to the route. There are plenty of places to get food and drink in Hoddesdon as the route starts at the end of the High Street but after that there is nothing until Roydon where I assume there is a shop or a pub although I didn't actully see one....

I suggest taking the road from the station to the A414 roundabout and turning right follow the footway alongside the A414 and over the rail bridge and almost immediately after there is an unsigned footpath through a wood that leads down to the river....

Walk this route

The only slight blip is at the start coming out of Harlow station, the map suggests you can cross directly under/over the railway straight after the station, but in fact it seems you have to go up to the roundabout and cross via the A414 road bridge, but it's not much further at all....
