Help connect Ware
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ware’s Slow Ways.

I walked from Ware to Sawbridgeworth on a day with occasional torrential rain. A lovely walk, big open skies and dozens of benches along the way....

Instead I would choose to walk along either just the towpaths of the two rivers Lee and Stort (14.5 miles but level and well surfaced), or use a route a bit further north part of which follows the Hertfordshire Way (which I have followed) and includes footpaths....

Should this be the case it is easy to continue up Lampits to its junction with Charlton Way at a roundabout....

Our weekly walk to Hoddesdon Market. Flat, easy, quick, lots to see. Can get muddy in parts in winter....
Ruth
A bit slippery in places (icy and wet) but still a beautiful, direct and enjoyable walk. Small temporary diversion around some works, easily navigated. Even better in sunny weather I would think....
Strider
What a wonderful walk on a wintery day, should be even better in summer....

It wasn’t really possible to make out what was going on in the fields but it’s possible that this route could get muddy in places when not frozen....
Jane Taylor
I was really very pleased with this route - it's easy to follow, pleasant, no hills too steep, gorgeous countryside, varied and interesting, no nasty road crossings, etc....

I walked this route from Ware to Hertord in December 2022, a few days after the big snowstorm....

Walk this routeIt was all along really lovely bits and pieces of river, crossing the River Beane, then the River Rib, then along the River Lea and then the River Lea Navigation....

This is a lovely route between Hertford and Ware, it's longer than the other routes but the river walk and views are lovely. It's car free (apart from the last bit along Ware high street) and quite fun to walk under the bridge with A414 roaring overhead. There are som styles and narrow gates though so it might not be the best route for everybody....
Slow Ways Darren
Some care needed at junction of the two rivers as signage is slightly confusing...
Sue and Ian
The path along the New River can be narrow and uneven in places, and there is a narrow kissing gate access point (photo 3)....

Road currently ( 6 March 2022) flooded between Mablets and Great Penny's Farm. Not passable on foot for about fifteen yards - verge submerged....
Ruth
However gates etc would be limiting for some and wet periods could result in flooding especially along the Ash Valley section....

There are faster routes but this for most of the route avoids the NCN61 which runs down the south side of the river. Overall I prefer this walk when I have the time...
David Thomas
Nice simple route between Ware and Hertford. Plenty of facilities at either end for food/drink. We’ll maintained footpaths mostly....
jimmyfatwing
A mix of paved and hard packed surface so a little bumpy in places for strollers with small/hard wheels....
Cpwhitehead
The route starts by running along Ware's main street where there are plenty of shops and cafes but then it follows the main road out of town. Halfway through the route the village of Chapmore End has a pub but apart from that there is nowhere to get food until Watton which has at least one shop and pub (the pub marked on the OS map at Stapleford has been converted into housing - this is where the other stretch of main road is)....
porcovolente
I don't think this route would be suitable for a standard baby buggy....
Schmelon
Probably the fastest Slow Ways route between Hertford and Ware, but busy at time with cyclists and well as pedestrians...

Then immediately at the bridge over the canal take the ramp down on the left to the canal path Or there is an alternative end at Ware (see Hewar 2): You can follow the canal right to the centre, a main road over a bridge Leave the canal path turn right down the road for 20m then turn left up to Ware rail station....

There are two pubs with food and drinks at Hudson which is around 40 percent into the route walking from the west....
