Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

07 Aug 2023At the time I walked this route, from Hoddesdon to Ware. The canal towpath was closed in Hoddesdon from Lampits to Essex Road. Should this be the case it is easy to continue up Lampits to its junction with Charlton Way at a roundabout. Continue north up Charlton Way and before the next roundabout take a right turn along a marked footpath. This path continue to Essex Road, which you cross and then pick up the towpath. Signs indicate that this was to be a temporary closure, so this detour may not be necessary. The rest of the route was very straight forward, following the New River Path all the way into Ware. There is a fine riverside pub The Jolly Fisherman at St Margarets.

07 Jan 2023Our weekly walk to Hoddesdon Market. Flat, easy, quick, lots to see. Can get muddy in parts in winter.

24 Apr 2022Walked Hoddesden to Ware.
Excellent towpath route, follows the New River and Lee River Navigation. Almost entirely traffic free. Two railway stations for early extraction if required.
A few steps onto/off from the towpaths. Plenty of benches, and a couple of locks where I sat and contemplated other people’s activity. The path along the New River can be narrow and uneven in places, and there is a narrow kissing gate access point (photo 3).
The Meeting Point at Ware is the railway station, and I was very happy to find a good cafe open right at the end point - a Slow Wayer’s dream.
