Help connect Hayes
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Hayes’s Slow Ways.

There are toilets in Hayes and Harlington Station (platforms 4/5 next to the lift) and in the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Uxbridge....

After crossing Park View Road, the route becomes very pleasant, with the wooded footpaths (photo #3, #7), and fields in Stockley Park, and the golf course (photo #6) which you reach by crossing a bridge (photo #4) over the A408/Stockley Road (photo #5)....

Good short route connecting Harlington with Hayes without (too much) main road. Shortly before Hayes and Harlington station the route comes onto the main road proper, and from there I went across the canal to the end point in Hayes town centre....

Adding to the flagged reviews as the footpath off Cleveland Road to the north of Brunel University campus is not a public right of way and has restricted gated access. And access to Stockley Park is also not as drawn. I’ve made a new route Uxbhay Three which corrects these problems and takes a slightly different approach to some of the routing, but which owes a lot to this route and the reviewer suggestions....

The road from Hayes town centre to Lake Farm Country Park was lively with people and traffic. I crossed the A437 (photo 4, no proper crossing point, but obvious desire lines show this is a popular route), and after a short walk along Bolingbroke Way I found a metal swing gate giving direct access to Stockley Park (and golf course). It’s a delightful path across Stockley Park, past the golf club (cafe, photo 7), then across a footbridge (photo 8), and eventually coming out on the A408....

Mini railway, ponies, wetland where a River Crane tributary rises, Harlington church (which I wandered around), views from the flyover and old buildings that have seen better days....
Strider
North of the M4 is a chance to drop off the A437 onto Bedwell Gardens, and a curvaceous concrete footpath will assist in this, but it is sadly in a neglected state and attracts broken glass and other debris, (photo) so some people may prefer to stay on the main pavement. There is a (mostly) pleasanter alternative, which passes directly the gorgeous old church at Harlington and gives a better idea of the community than the main road. I’ll add it to show the option is there....

I walked from Hayes to Southall on a lovely sunny June morning. (I had combined this with the Southall to Northolt route – and then a bus back to Hayes)....
Aamwalk
Also, Hayes is a cosmopolitan mix of different food places if you are after refreshments as well as being a transport hub with buses and a train station on the Elizabeth line....

The slough spur of the grand union canel is much more rural than the main canel and is an interesting contrast. Various bits of interesting canel industrial heritage along the way....

Later at the other issues, when you get to the large roundabout as the West Drayton road joins the stockley road go into the new park entrance on the corner. I like stockley park, you can either walk around the edge of the park (around the golf course) or follow the path through the middle....
Aamwalk
More steps to a bridge leading to a short road section before a shady path between woods and lakes with barriers for wheeled transport....

From the Three Horseshoes there is a busy bustling High Street with bright shops....
Strider
There is a bridge and road to cross near The Malt Shovel pub and later some busy roads in Uxbridge town but otherwise it is flat, easy to navigate pretty canal paths full of nature....
Strider
Variety of smooth canal two paths and the wide pavements of Southall Broadway and Hayes. We walked it in reverse and it was still easy to follow. It was quite quiet along the canal, only met a handful of people - all of who said hello!...
Slow Ways Darren
A really pleasant combination of the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal and the Grand Union itself linked up by the Colne Valley Trail....
Slow Ways Darren
The slow way doesn’t stop at the station in Iver so after exploring Iver and the beautiful church we had to walk a little further out of the town to get to the station....
Alison Moore
There is some canalside industrial impact, in particular at the Hayes end of the route; but mostly it’s the sort of peaceful off road path one expects along a canal. Both where I joined the towpath at Uxbridge, and left it at Hayes, the route line wasn’t completely accurate and I had to look around for the access points....
Jane Taylor
A very practical straight forward walk between Hayes & Southall via the Grand Union Canal. Southall end is via high street which can be busy otherwise a quiet canal side walk. Paths are good and clear of major puddles and mud (our trial of this Slow Way was after a period of heavy rain)....

The road through Southall is fairly big but the walking environment is pleasant, then most of the rest of the route follows canal towpaths....

I haven’t walked this route, but the crossing of the canal just near Iver is inaccurate, and this route is therefore impassable. I’ve uploaded an alternative for Iver two (called Iver three)....
mtormey
It’s a good route, but the last bit from the canal to Iver isn’t accurate or passable. I’ve uploaded a new route option that addresses this....

The canal walking is great, but there’s also some really fine woodland walking and you even go over a canal aqueduct, which is pretty cool!...

This route mainly follows the Grand Union canal and there’s only one main turn to make at the canal junction which makes it very easy to follow. Good paths, nearly all paved, generally flat and no gates. Also note there is no lighting along the way....

1: route goes through a gate into the grounds of Brunel University and this gate is only open 7am - 7pm weekedays, closed at weekends. 2: approaching Stockley Park business park on the A408, this route indicates a left turn but this seems to be through a very narrow gate, seriously overgrown and not passable safely....
