Connect Dunstable with Slow Ways
We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Britain’s towns, cities and national parks
more walks and reviews are needed to fully connect Dunstable to the verified network. Can you give a hike and help?

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Dunstable’s Slow Ways.

So instead of following the route onto Dallow Downs, I followed Runley Road (photo #10) until where it turns north towards Dallow Road. Here I then climbed up to Dallow Downs (steep!) before continuing the actual route, which then lead me again down a narrow metalled path (photo #11) onto Dallow Road. At the end of the fairly busy Dallow Road (photo #12), an interesting pedestrian bridge (photo #13) brings you onto the busy car-focussed streets towards the finish at the Luton Interchange....

Then it is across and along a few fields with crops (photo #3), before going around a little recreation ground near Slapton. After going past its church (photo #4), there are a few more fields. A really nice and wide path (photo #10) (and going up again) gets you over the hill towards Dunstable....

Walk this routeThen it is across and along a few fields with crops (photo #3), before going around a little recreation ground near Slapton. On its north side the path is a little tricky, with taller grass again (photo #9), and after going across a field (photo #10) you end up on Tring Road, which is a long slog into Dunstable (photo #11, #12). PitDun 1 also goes from Eaton Bray into Dunstable, and is a much more suitable route, avoiding Tring Road....

Walk this routeThis is so badly drawn, that I couldn't really follow it. It has swims across a canal, etc. I'll upload the route that I actually followed, and add a review for that....

After leaving the little village of Pitstone, you follow some fields to Ivinghoe (photo #2). A path alongside a field gets you to the next village (photo #8), Eaton Bray, where another climb gets you onto the fields between here and Church End. A really nice and wide path (photo #10) (and going up again) gets you over the hill towards Dunstable....

From the top, you walk around the Kensworth Quarry (photo #4), before heading downhill to the church at Church End (photo #5). There is another uphill there that takes you along more cornfields (photo #7, #8) with some great views to the quiet town of Markygate (photo #9, #10)....

The surfaces are mostly good and hold up well in winter, although the path between Ivinghoe Aston and Ivinghoe can get muddy and tends to form puddles in wet weather....

A pleasant enough walk mainly through fields and rural pathways. Beautiful views of Dunstable Downs. Maybe more difficult during the rainy seasons and not fully accessible....
Dipa Patel
From Houghton Regis the route heads out into open country, following the Chiltern Way for a substantial part of the route with some fine views and passing through the pretty village of Harlington, which has a cafe and two pubs....

Dunstable and Luton have grown together to form a single conurbation but this route runs along the hills to the south through attractive countryside for most of its length. It crosses the M1 in an underpass. On footpaths for some of the way with narrow paths, low branches and kissing gates, so perhaps more suitable for walking than cycling....
