Then a series of wide farm tracks in good condition to the manicured playing fields and stately manor of Beechwood school. A mix of tracks and footpaths take you to open grazing land with sheep (and a huge sweet chestnut). A track bypasses Home Farm through a wood, then out into open grazing following telegraph poles. Past the cress beds and a short 30m walk along a verge to a hill....

Walk this routeMost of this route is fine, but I found the path completly blocked at Grrm near Pudephats Lane, Grid ref 075134. I will attempt to find anothe route from Hemel to Flaunden....

From Markygate you climb up through a residential street (photo #1) and some woods (photo #2) to end up walking through corn fields (photo #3). Just before Flamstead the route goes through a field with horses (photo #5), but they were not paying me any attention. On the most western roundabout, I crossed on the south side (photo #9), and then across the A5183 north (photo #10) to join the River Ver Trail....

On the bottom end, just before it gets to the double fence there were access issues, and the path through the field towards Norrington End was blocked by cows....

From the top, you walk around the Kensworth Quarry (photo #4), before heading downhill to the church at Church End (photo #5). There is another uphill there that takes you along more cornfields (photo #7, #8) with some great views to the quiet town of Markygate (photo #9, #10)....

A beautiful walk, open fields, golf courses, woodland, and quaint villages with interesting architecture....

The M1 hums constantly and the low planes taking off from Luton airport roar overhead. I did hear some birdsong in the carpark outside Luton station. The walk into Luton is made pleasant by the use of a cut through and a park....

Walk this routeI didn't understand why there was an extra three sides of a square towards the end, where instead of continuing straight down Hicks Road, there was a left turn into Windmill Lane, I then walked straight past the right turn onto the footpath which has a way marker set back but no finger post so is easy to miss as you pass the entrance to a large house. Photographs: 1 Luton Station, 2 Luton Town Hall, 3 The Plough at Woodside, 4 Woodside, 5 Lower Woodside, 6, 7, 8 & 9 Woodside to Half Moon Lane, 10 dogs and obstructive gate on the pathway from Windmill Lane, 11 view of Markyate, 12 & 13 Markyate High Street...

Almost immediately out of Markyate you're in beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, going through and around arable fields, pasture, meadow, besides woods, through villages with scenic churches... It's mostly off-road, can be muddy in places but overall I really enjoyed this walk!...

Therefore, really important to follow the route carefully, preferably using a GPS....

Some of the sign posting around the Pumpkin Farm also needs improving. Otherwise, a lovely walk through rural pathways and fields....
Dipa Patel
It’s a splendid walk, about 90% off road, with a mix of paths, lanes and tracks. The route does a little detour to the pub through the churchyard, if you are not bothered then just walk straight through the churchyard....

Walk this routeThere is a shady path next to Knot Wood before a gravel path through a golf course (not across the greens, no ball dodging). Across a road and through a gap in the hedge and into fields following the Chiltern Way, although the marked path has wandered, the route given here will guide you accurately....

This is a great route from the centre of Luton to Markyate. It is mostly off-road so wellies or boots are recommended. You can pick up the route at Farley Hill, Woodside or Slip End....
