Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Sep 2024 Summer

I walked this on a slightly overcast moderately warm morning. There had been some rain the preceding days, but that didn't affect anything. I started in Dunstable.

After a few residential streets, you soon begin you climb up Blow's Down (photo #1). With great views over Dunstable (photo #2). The paths are reasonably well walkable, with only a few nettles, kissing gates (photo #3), and stingy plants in the way (photo #4). After rounding the north end of it, the walk continues along fields (photo #5). Take care with crossing Chaul End Road, as the little traffic moves fast (photo #6). On the other side there is a lovely wood to follow (photo #7), which soon is going to be a public footpath and bridleway. The section towards the M1 is down a slope with lovely plants.

After crossing underneath (photo #8) the M1 I think I missed an actual footpath, and ended up right behind houses with impenetrable paths (photo #9). So instead of following the route onto Dallow Downs, I followed Runley Road (photo #10) until where it turns north towards Dallow Road. Here I then climbed up to Dallow Downs (steep!) before continuing the actual route, which then lead me again down a narrow metalled path (photo #11) onto Dallow Road.

At the end of the fairly busy Dallow Road (photo #12), an interesting pedestrian bridge (photo #13) brings you onto the busy car-focussed streets towards the finish at the Luton Interchange.

Good route, and probably would have been better if I hadn't missed that path!.

A very well chosen route. Dunstable and Luton have grown together to form a single conurbation but this route runs along the hills to the south through attractive countryside for most of its length. It crosses the M1 in an underpass. On footpaths for some of the way with narrow paths, low branches and kissing gates, so perhaps more suitable for walking than cycling.
