Give a hike!Help connect Leighton Buzzard
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Leighton Buzzard’s Slow Ways.

Then it is across and along a few fields with crops (photo #3), before going around a little recreation ground near Slapton. After going past its church (photo #4), there are a few more fields. A really nice and wide path (photo #10) (and going up again) gets you over the hill towards Dunstable....

Walk this routeThen it is across and along a few fields with crops (photo #3), before going around a little recreation ground near Slapton. On its north side the path is a little tricky, with taller grass again (photo #9), and after going across a field (photo #10) you end up on Tring Road, which is a long slog into Dunstable (photo #11, #12). PitDun 1 also goes from Eaton Bray into Dunstable, and is a much more suitable route, avoiding Tring Road....

Walk this routeThis is so badly drawn, that I couldn't really follow it. It has swims across a canal, etc. I'll upload the route that I actually followed, and add a review for that....

The rest of the walk along the Grand Union Canal was stunning with the amazing autumn colours (photo #3, #4, #5, #8), although a little monotonous. After the Wyvers Shipping Company the route leaves the canal to go along the river Ouzel (photo #10), where the path was in two small sections slightly flooded. To avoid it, you could go along the canal (photo #13) a bit further south to Leighton Road (photo #12)....

In autumn and spring may be muddy in some places where it goes through fields. May need wellies...

From Leighton Buzzard the route goes through some alleyways to reach the Grand Union Canal, which it then follows for a long stretch. Just after crossing the nearly empty B488, and going over the West Coast Main Line the public footpath goes straight across a field. From Cheddington towards Pitstone the route was mostly on pavement, besides for a small section of Grand Union Canal at the end which you reach through a railway arch....

Road from canal to B488 has lots of parked cars so may be busy at times. After climbing stile head uphill close to fence on right to join road After model farm turn right on reaching back of houses to reach path to gain access to road turning left before taking path to church which you pass on your left Follow road through local houses and turn left along road through village...

A pleasant enough walk mainly through fields and rural pathways. Beautiful views of Dunstable Downs. Maybe more difficult during the rainy seasons and not fully accessible....

From the starting point in central Leighton Buzzard you soon find yourself offroad alongside the River Ouzel. There are links to public transport at either end although the Leighton Buzzard end is a 10min walk from the railway station....

I knew that if I just followed the canal and created a new Slow Way I could shave 3km off the walk but I'm so glad I stuck with this Slow Way. A footpath to the right takes you through woods and a swingbridge takes you across the canal. A path past the pretty church precedes a road crossing and a footpath into a field and a link with Cheddington Railway Station. The route as far as the canal was easy to walk and crosses the railway. The meeting place is a short walk along a main road into the town centre, away from the railway station which was my destination....

There is also an unnecessary detour along Wing Road in Linslade at the start of the route, given that the canal path can easily be picked up from Leighton Road, with ramped access adjacent to the Tesco car park....
