Help connect Pitstone

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Pitstone’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route

From Pitstone the route follows a residential road for a short bit, before going through a tree tunnel (photo #1) towards the canal. After crossing over the Aylesbury Arm, the route then follows the main arm of the GUC for a short section, before continuing along the Tring reservoirs (photo #5, #6). Once leaving (photo #7) the reservoirs, there is a short section in Little Tring along a road (photo #8)....

After navigating the busy roads in Aylesbury, the route then starts along the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal (photo #1). After the lock, the path becomes narrower, and was muddy in places, but still fairly easy going (photo #6). At watery Lane, the route then proceeds along the Grand Union Canal's main arm towards Pitstone (photo #7, #8, #11). It's a wide path (photo #10), and easy going again....

However, the real problems with this route are where it crosses the canal from the left bank to the right bank making a beeline for Pitstone. As I walked the "right" way around Pitstone as part of TriPit Three, I will include that section as part of my review for AylPit Two as well....

The surfaces are mostly good and hold up well in winter, although the path between Ivinghoe Aston and Ivinghoe can get muddy and tends to form puddles in wet weather....

I was glad to be wearing long sleeves and full-length trousers during this section, which appears to have become a lot more overgrown since the previous reviewer walked the route....

Walk this route

The walk takes footpaths out of Tring, goes around the reservoirs, and then canalside paths. Tring has everything a small town needs - and regular buses to Aylesbury/Berkhamsted/Hemel Hempstead. Pitstone is very small and I didn’t see any sign of refreshments around the meeting point area....

Walk this route

It’s an ok path for those desperate to get away from the canal for a few miles but if you want a good route to use all year round then this isn’t it....

Walk this route

From Leighton Buzzard the route goes through some alleyways to reach the Grand Union Canal, which it then follows for a long stretch. Just after crossing the nearly empty B488, and going over the West Coast Main Line the public footpath goes straight across a field. From Cheddington towards Pitstone the route was mostly on pavement, besides for a small section of Grand Union Canal at the end which you reach through a railway arch....

After a few locks, the route goes away from the canal, to reach a short section of the Aylesbury Arm. After another short section of canal, the route goes around the Startop's End and Tring reservoirs, with their many birds....

Road from canal to B488 has lots of parked cars so may be busy at times. After climbing stile head uphill close to fence on right to join road After model farm turn right on reaching back of houses to reach path to gain access to road turning left before taking path to church which you pass on your left Follow road through local houses and turn left along road through village...

If you know the area, this might be considered a slightly boring route at the start and finish with a walk along the canal and a road walk. From Aylesbury a fairly straightforward exit from the town to reach the canal followed by the canal towpath. Interesting section from there to reach canal but may be muddy in places....

I knew that if I just followed the canal and created a new Slow Way I could shave 3km off the walk but I'm so glad I stuck with this Slow Way. A footpath to the right takes you through woods and a swingbridge takes you across the canal. A path past the pretty church precedes a road crossing and a footpath into a field and a link with Cheddington Railway Station. The route as far as the canal was easy to walk and crosses the railway. The meeting place is a short walk along a main road into the town centre, away from the railway station which was my destination....

At SP 9174 1301 you are encouraged to follow a path to the left which then turns right around the edge of the woods. The footpath has been diverted and you can still see where it used to be. I've amended the route and reviewed the corrected version in Tripit two....

Passing Tringford Reservoir just added to the appeal of the walk. The reservoir itself was a highlight of the walk, the countryside to the north, the cormorants crowding on the islands. This had 5 star all over it, rejoining the canal was welcome and the navigation to leave and rejoin the towpath was smooth. I'd read the review of Tripit one but my OS app was unaffected by the bug which indicated staying on the towpath side of the canal. Eliminating the section on the "other side of the canal" and the walk along the lane would vastly improve what is otherwise a really lovely walk....

There is also an unnecessary detour along Wing Road in Linslade at the start of the route, given that the canal path can easily be picked up from Leighton Road, with ramped access adjacent to the Tesco car park....
