Help connect Dunfermline

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Dunfermline’s Slow Ways.

From Kelty, there is not really a walkable path - were walking along the side of B roads as the path has been built over at different points....

The last bit feels like a struggle as you are walking into the town for a while and our accommodation was slightly off route at the other side. Again it is a relatively flat and manageable route....

But there are lots of issues with the part from Kelty to Kinross - the route no longer exists so you're forced onto the road. It's be a lot nicer to walk around Loch Leven for longer too. I wouldn't recommend this walk as it currently is....

Walk this route

Other than walking along some busy road and routing our way away across some farmland, this is a really nice and accessible walk. Particularly loved the parts through sheep fields/woodland after the cemetery (through Bellknowes). The walk from the outer bit of Dunfermline to the final point on the route takes longer than we thought it would!...

Earlier on, however, there is a bit of nasty and busy road (the A985) you walk down and over - there is quite a wide bank on the side so it's walkable, but it's a bit of an unpleasant trudge....

We eventually arrived at a farm to the right of Loch Fitty (Lochend Farm), and made our way through the following field. The walk takes you well around the right edge of Loch Fitty, at which point we decided to reroute, veering to the left hand path along a walkway over the loch, which I'd recommend. Before we knew, we had left Loch Leven emerging out into the carpark of a cashmere factory having barely seen Loch Leven at all, which we had been looking forward to. I imagine there would have been a lot nicer - albeit slightly longer - to have walked around the right hand side of the loch, so we'd actually be in proximity to the water for much longer....

Keep following road round the estate until you reach a path to the right that becomes Pleasance Road that connects with Hillseat Road and then to Netherbeath Road, which is a broad track with occasional vehicles...

It's not the most scenic of walks and is generally quite noisy with traffic but why wait for a train when you can walk there. Pittencrief Park is well worth the visit once you arrive in Dunfermline...

It's a simple enough walk with a selection of terrain. Pavement, road and off road....

Walk this route

after heading up Holyrood Place, take a right along Leys Park Road (the road before the route suggested Bellyeoman Road). at the end of this road, there is a cycle path that runs parallel to the suggested route but is completely off road. at the end of the cycle path, cross the road and turn onto Queen Margaret Fauld. follow this road around to then rejoin the route at the turn off onto the farm track. we followed the rest of the route as suggested, which is mostly along quiet country paths. at the Hill of Beath, once you have turned off prior to Rose Cottage, the navigation becomes challenging due to recent works which have disrupted the old paths. it's a shame as otherwise this route would be accessible to everyone but this part lets it down with the poor paths and boggy ground. once into Hill of Beath and Cowdenbeath, the route goes among houses and is mostly pavement walking on quiet roadsides. overall, a lovely route and fairly accessible for all, and even better making the modification at the start to keep the route more off road :)...

Accessibility in the first section is good however apart from a footpath for the first 10 minutes of the walk you are then walking on a road which can get busy depending on the time of day you would walk this....
