Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It's a beautiful walk out of Dunfermline through some mossy woods, but when you reach the fields you have to climb a fence and under barbed wire and then find yourself trudging along in the ditch between two fields. It's not an easy walk at all and quite treacherous and grown over at points. From Kelty, there is not really a walkable path - were walking along the side of B roads as the path has been built over at different points. At one point we had to scramble through someones back garden. When we arrived at Loch Leven we found access to the loch was gated off, I think the otherside would have been alot nicer. Kinross is an absolutely lovely town with a great coffee shop and pizza place.

Dunfermline to Kinross is nice (although a bit of making your way over barbed wire and along ditches...). But there are lots of issues with the part from Kelty to Kinross - the route no longer exists so you're forced onto the road. It's be a lot nicer to walk around Loch Leven for longer too. I wouldn't recommend this walk as it currently is.

There are a few pleasant moments in this walk but there are superseded by issues. Quite soon out of Dunfermline, you get to Townhill Country Park which is a gorgeous woodland. You can't exactly keep to the routed walk here - but there are lots of little alternate winding walks that get you through. With a bit of common sense you can wiggle your way through by walking in the right general direction. Once you emerge from the woodland you see a sign reading 'Pugline 1/3 mile' - from this point things get tricky. The path winds off to the left but the Slow Way route directs you to stick to the right, which means clambering over some barbed wire and ducking under fallen trees. We weren't able to go back to try and reroute the walk along the public path and understand if there is a more walkable to get back on track. But we managed to make our way through but then had to walk along a lumpy and tree dense bank to a boggy farm track which had us questioning for some time whether this was a public pass or not. We eventually arrived at a farm to the right of Loch Fitty (Lochend Farm), and made our way through the following field. To get out of this field and into a more walkable clearing through St Ninians, we again had to climb over barbed wire - not ideal. The walk takes you well around the right edge of Loch Fitty, at which point we decided to reroute, veering to the left hand path along a walkway over the loch, which I'd recommend. It's a pretty expanse of water with swans and peeks onto the incoming hill of St Ninians. The next bit of the walk through St Ninians and into Kelty works well. Look out for the art murals in Kelty (particularly of the beast of Blairadam!). It's a shame that the walk just cuts off Blairadam Forest, which is supposedly a beautiful woodland with lots of animals (including red squirrels). The rest of the walk into Kinross was not good. The path that edges the right hand side of Red Moss wood snakes through unwalkable farmland and even someone's overgrown garden! To avoid this, we ended up walking all the way the B996. We eventually linked back to the last few metres of route around Loch Leven. Before we knew, we had left Loch Leven emerging out into the carpark of a cashmere factory having barely seen Loch Leven at all, which we had been looking forward to. I imagine there would have been a lot nicer - albeit slightly longer - to have walked around the right hand side of the loch, so we'd actually be in proximity to the water for much longer. You're then in Kinross. I would say that the entire walk from Kelty to Kinross needs rethinking.
