Help connect Ditton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ditton’s Slow Ways.

From Snodland Station it was a short walk to Brooklands Fishing Lakes where the off-road section begins. From there the path is under a small railway embankment through a A-shaped width restriction (photo 2) which seemed slightly narrower than normal. First is a long stretch between the railway embankment and the fishing lakes, at first beside the lake* on their access track which was pretty muddy (photo 3), but soon on a drier path behind trees and beside the embankment* with a few glimpses across the lakes*. Some loops of razor wire had fallen from the wall (photo 6) but didn't block the path and neither did brambles beside the path (photo 7). At Aylesford the path left the riverside onto a road with mixed residential and commercial buildings and from here it was roads all the way....

A combination of things make it seem plausible that the route goes inland just north and just south of where the actual, riverside footpath has a junction with New Hythe Lane. Open Street Maps are, as usual, more detailed and in theory helpful, but part of the path to the north of the junction (where it physically hangs over the river!) is missing from OSM, suggesting a dead end and so, again, that the route (and PRoW) must be on the landward side of the river wall because OSM don't differentiate PRoW from private paths and roads....

A nice route, with very little roadwalking once beyond West Malling....

The riverside parts are very tranquil especially between Allington Lock and Maidstone where the houseboats also add a bit of colour. There was a footpath diversion near Coldharbour Lane in Sept 2023 but it was well signed and Kent Council's website suggests it has now be reinstated, March 2024. There was a footpath diversion somewhere between Coldharbour Lane and the M20 footbridge but it was easy to use (and apparently reinstated before this edit in March 2024) and a railway level crossing....

The start point would be better from the junction of Station Road and the A20 OS (Grid Ref: TQ 71279 58385) where there are buses; it is 0.6 miles further on (Northeast) to the Station....

The path then follows the river bank to Aylesford where there is a short road section and it is necessary to cross the road by Forstal and Station Road at the old Aylesford Bridge. Overall it is a reasonable walking route (with limited climbing and some mixed surfaces with some sections suitable for a range of wheeled access ( particularly the riverbank sections apart from the section in Aylesford which was muddy and had many roots. The other side of the riverbank ( right bank) from Maidstone to Aylesford ( without crossing at the locks) is easier to use without the fields and more rough sections across fields and woods and avoids 2 of the level crossings...
