Help connect Snodland

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Snodland’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

From Snodland Station it was a short walk to Brooklands Fishing Lakes where the off-road section begins. From there the path is under a small railway embankment through a A-shaped width restriction (photo 2) which seemed slightly narrower than normal. First is a long stretch between the railway embankment and the fishing lakes, at first beside the lake* on their access track which was pretty muddy (photo 3), but soon on a drier path behind trees and beside the embankment* with a few glimpses across the lakes*. Some loops of razor wire had fallen from the wall (photo 6) but didn't block the path and neither did brambles beside the path (photo 7). At Aylesford the path left the riverside onto a road with mixed residential and commercial buildings and from here it was roads all the way....

A combination of things make it seem plausible that the route goes inland just north and just south of where the actual, riverside footpath has a junction with New Hythe Lane. Open Street Maps are, as usual, more detailed and in theory helpful, but part of the path to the north of the junction (where it physically hangs over the river!) is missing from OSM, suggesting a dead end and so, again, that the route (and PRoW) must be on the landward side of the river wall because OSM don't differentiate PRoW from private paths and roads....

Walk this route

This is a an easy route, with much of the well-signposted, flat path farm being concrete, gravel or, for the final stretch between Allington lock and Maidstone, tarmac. Despite the made path, it's also a glorious route which cuts through Kent farmland not yet fully industrialised and crossing a tidal, near-estuarine stretch of the Medway: you step back into a Michael Balcon film. That can't last - so it's a walk worth making before the landscape changes forever....
