Help connect Chatburn

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Chatburn’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route

I reckoned I'd walked all the paths on the hill 45 years ago, before moving away from the area. I'm not knocking off any stars for the miserable weather, so the full five stars are because this is pretty much the best way to walk from Chatburn to Barley, given that the biggest hill in the area is slap-bang in the middle. How did I miss the path climbing Pendle Hill all those years ago? There are actually two paths, and they provide the essential access onto the hill between the farm at Hookcliffe and the summit....

Walking from Chatburn the start of the footpath is a bit tricky to find as it starts part way along a house driveway, there is a FP sign on a utility pole. You will encounter gates, kissing gates, steps, and one section of uneven stony ground (it looked quite polished so it could be slippy when damp)....

There are quite a number of damaged stiles that proved challenging and one stile seems to have disappeared. The wooded section after New Laithe is tricky as it overgrown and the stile is difficult to locate (near to ///boots.younger.newlywed see picture). If you decide to walk the route as planned there is a section of wooden fence in the corner of the field that you can cross ///innovate.give.jigging....

This route is a very nice stroll for the most part along the banks of the River Ribble (part of the Ribble Way) and is therefor a well established path popular with dog walkers....
