On leaving the canal at bridge 143, the route joins the Taff Trail. After a mile or so it improves a bit and then merges into a regular forestry track up to the point of leaving the Taff Trail on a narrower footpath all the way into Abercynafon, which is just 3 or 4 dwellings, so there are no facilities here. Photo 5 - The footpath on leaving the Taff Trail down through the woods...

Walk this routeAs people have said, the first part of the walk is rather boggy, a bit overgrown in parts, and you need a decent pair of walking boots....

The walk was very varied, starting with some boggy terrain as you climb up from Nant Ddu, with a steep ascent to Pen y Ban and some excellent views, and a pleasant descent back into Brecon....
Lila Mehta
We were led in this walk by the estimable Nia, without whom I think I might have had more difficulty navigating this first part. Personally I found the downhill stretch more taxing as it was a long slow slog down hill followed by a walk along a country lane into town....
Tom Morris
Overall an enjoyable walk, given 4 instead of 5 stars because of the beginning, along an extremely busy and dangerous section of the A470 - be sure to keep to the verge and keep your wits about you, and also because this route may not be safe in poor weather....
Nia LK
The route passes some very nice pub gardens when you arrive in Talybont so if you didn't want to venture on this could make a nice end point. The route then starts to climb up and passes alongside Talybont reservoir with some great views but slightly more challenging underfoot....
Deri Roberts
It`s easy walking all the way and the canal path is in good condition, although it can get a bit muddy in parts after wet weather. It`s also a good candidate for wheeling, although there are a couple of kissing gates in the field at Llangattock, which may not suit wheelchairs....
Paul Chilcott
This is a fairly easy way to get up into the Beacons as its not too steep and has great views of the main Beacons....

Walk this routeThe country lane up to Pen-y-Fan from Brecon is quiet and has good views of the mountains on the approach....
Neil Summersgill
Easyish walk from Brecon to Abercynafon along the canal path and then up the talybont valley mostly along disused railway, with just a bit of older tramway that is slightly tougher underfoot....
Colesmith
Straightforward walk along the old canal towpath, which is now a cycle- and foot-path. Very level and easy. Several locks, aquaducts and beer gardens along the route....
Colesmith
The route follows the Brecon Monmothshire Canal nearly all the way and cuts between the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. There are great views of the surrounding hills but the star is the canal, bridges and locks. Plenty of trees to provide shade and lots of wildlife to observe (e.g. herons)....
