Help connect Abercynafon

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Abercynafon’s Slow Ways.

At Coed Llwyn Du going down into the Crawnon Valley, I missed the path that leaves the Bryn Oer tram road, and had to find an alternative route through Coed Llwyd Du (which was definitely not a good Slow Way alternative). It`s a lovely valley, although after leaving the low levels around the reservoir, you don`t get many views until you reach the top of the ridge, as you are walking through the forestry, but from Pen Rhiw Calch onwards along the ridge, they are stunning. The last stretch takes a windy route through the forestry and then the last drag up the main road. An excellent walk for the most part and I was tempted to knock a star off for the road stretch leading into Nant Ddu and some of the forestry stages being a little over lengthy, but the best parts are fantastic, so let`s stick with the 5 stars. This route is similar to Abecri1, but with a couple of changes due to an access problem near Llwyn yr Eos Farm just outside Llangynidr and also a couple of minor changes on the canal path between Llangynidr and Dardy, effectively staying on the canal path instead of the road. On a clear day the view from the top of Tor y Foel must be amazing - it was a bit of a gloomy day for my walk, but still some great local vistas, such as the view down into the Usk Valley and Llangynidr (Photo 8). After Llangynidr, there is a long but easy stretch along the canal (Photo 10) all the way to Dardy, where the route leaves the canal and follows a lane into Llangattock and then up the streets into Crickhowell. On reaching the top of the ridge at Bryn Melyn, the track (Photo 6) is metalled until the start of the grassy path up Tor y Foel (Photo 7) which is open all the way over the top and down to the start of the farmland. On leaving the canal at bridge 143, the route joins the Taff Trail. After a mile or so it improves a bit and then merges into a regular forestry track up to the point of leaving the Taff Trail on a narrower footpath all the way into Abercynafon, which is just 3 or 4 dwellings, so there are no facilities here. The route passes some very nice pub gardens when you arrive in Talybont so if you didn't want to venture on this could make a nice end point. The route then starts to climb up and passes alongside Talybont reservoir with some great views but slightly more challenging underfoot....
