Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Except for the short stretches at the start and finish and one short section along a lane near Pencelli, this walk is entirely along the Mon & Brec Canal and is some of the finest canal walking anywhere. It`s easy walking all the way and the canal path is in good condition, although it can get a bit muddy in parts after wet weather.

It`s also a good candidate for wheeling, although there are a couple of kissing gates in the field at Llangattock, which may not suit wheelchairs.

Straightforward walk along the old canal towpath, which is now a cycle- and foot-path. Very level and easy. Several locks, aquaducts and beer gardens along the route.

The route follows the Brecon Monmothshire Canal nearly all the way and cuts between the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. There are great views of the surrounding hills but the star is the canal, bridges and locks. Plenty of trees to provide shade and lots of wildlife to observe (e.g. herons). As expected fairly flat all the way and easy enough for bike and buggies as well.
