The issue with this route is that the transporter bridge has been closed for quite some time and it has no plans in the near future to reopen...

The section around Cowpen Bewley woodland park is very nice but is the most challenging terrain on the route. You probably can get through the whole thing on a bike, but not wheelchair or pushchair. The route can be muddy when it is wet....

The transporter bridge across the Tees remains closed (Dec 2022) and with no return date in sight. An alternative route would use the Newport Bridge (A1032) which has decent footpaths next to a busy road....

The paths in the countryside to the west of Hartlepool are not well walked and are narrow footpaths at best....

After Stillington we have a few farmers who have decided that public footpaths don’t need to be maintained and can be ploughed and planted over....
