Help connect Middlesbrough
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Middlesbrough’s Slow Ways.

All in all a nice walk to get away from everyone - don't expect to see anyone else on the trail. Mostly grassed path, some paved \ gravelled and a number of anti bike chicanes, steps and a metal bridge to cross. Recommend a few site seeing detours - at the beginning head to the Tees Transporter Bridge, then to the Clock Tower. A detour to the Tees river viewpoint over the rail bridge of Art is not far....

The route crosses the Infinity Bridge to use the north side of the River Tees - however there is now a permissive footpath along the south side from the Infinity Bridge to the Tees Newport Bridge, so you can now opt for the south side. From this point onwards the route was easy to follow and Infinity bridge was an impressive way to cross the river (pic 10). Cross the river at the Tees Newport Bridge (pic 13) using the ramp on the north east side or steps on the south west....

As you approach the A66 Newport junction alongside the motor dealership (pic 2), bear right and the path follows a network of underpasses under the junction. The route then follows a well-made up, tarmac path in the direction of Stockton and goes under the A19 (pic 7). As you pass under the Tees Barrage bridge bear right and then quickly follow the path to the left following it down in front of the visitor centre and cafe (pic 11)....

The issue with this route is that the transporter bridge has been closed for quite some time and it has no plans in the near future to reopen...

The transporter bridge across the Tees remains closed (Dec 2022) and with no return date in sight. An alternative route would use the Newport Bridge (A1032) which has decent footpaths next to a busy road....

An alternative route would have to cross the River Tees by the Newport Bridge (A1032)...

The transporter bridge has been closed since august 2019. It’s unknown when it will re-open....
