The section around Cowpen Bewley woodland park is very nice but is the most challenging terrain on the route. You probably can get through the whole thing on a bike, but not wheelchair or pushchair. The route can be muddy when it is wet....

An alternative route would have to cross the River Tees by the Newport Bridge (A1032)...

An alternative route (perhaps less varied but certainly easier to route-find) would be to make the way through Hartlepool town to the start of the old railway line in Ocean Road then to follow the old railway line between Hartlepool and Hesleden....

Cannot recommend this route as it involves crossing the extremely busy A19 dual carriageway and there is no safe way to do this. An alternative route would have to be either further north to cross the A19 at the A179 or further south to cross the A19 at the A689. There are no safe crossing points between these points....
