Help connect Woodbridge

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Woodbridge’s Slow Ways.

These can be avoided if you walk around the outside of the course on Lower Road, this is a designated Quiet Lane. The fields to the north of the church in Ufford are prone to flooding (see picture) and an alternative in wet weather is to follow Barrack Lane between Lower Road and Spring Road, there is a pavement most of the way. Spring Lane is a designated Quiet Lane. Lower Ufford Road is not a designated Quiet Road but cars are not a problem....

This route has issues, particularly issues with access around Rendlesham estate. The entirety of this estate is surrounded by fences and private land, the ONLY means of access is from the A1152 which is a busy road with no pavement for much of its length. After carefully crossing the A1152 in a 60mph zone the route drops down a set of eight steps to a boardwalk through the reed beds. At the end of Hollesley Road the route suggests turning left then right up Ash Road before turning onto a track heading northwest into Rendlesham. To avoid the trespassing the options are to walk along the A1152 at a point where it is a 40mph road with no pavement, or divert off the Hollesley Road through Friday Street (TM 332 521) and around the edge of the old USAF airbase to come out on the footpath opposite Acer Drive (TM 338 530)...

All significant road crossings on this route have subways or pelican crossings but there are busy-ish minor roads to be negotiated. On the opposite side of the road the route skirts the edge of a large car park before heading across heathland to the old Felixstowe Road (TM 249 463). At this point the route heads easterly along a rough roadway following the edge of the woodlands before turning north onto Waldringfield Road (TM 256 465). At the the junction with Main Road (TM 250 467) turn right onto a rough track called Three Stiles Lane which heads east to meet up with the Waldringfield Road (TM 256 468)....

Once you've passed the A12, the route takes you through fields, woods, and along the banks of the Deben with lovely views of Woodbridge for the last kilometre. Be warned: the path around Kyson Point is a stretch of beach and, if the tide is high, you will get wet feet (as I did)....

Once at the end of Mill Lane, you turn left to go down Waldringfield Road for about 300m. We also avoided the road section of Waldringfield Road, instead using Three Stiles Lane and an unofficial, but clearly very well used, footpath from Three Stiles Lane due south to Mill Lane....

- on an extremely high tide, the section of path where Martlesham Creek enters the River Deben can be flooded, but this is unusual, - the path through Sluice Wood to the South of Martlesham Creek includes a long flight of steps, but these can be avoided by (coming from Kesgrave) continuing along the road where it changes from Waldringfield Road into School Lane, then at the bottom of the hill turning right onto the Fynn Valley walk, which brings you back to Martlesham Creek at the bottom of the steps...
