Help connect Shildon

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Shildon’s Slow Ways.

It's got some beatiful bits, but it's got a few neglected paths at the Bishop Auckland end - which is why I did not give it more stars....

Leaving Shildon watch out for the footpath turn off the road, which leads straight down the valley like a railway line. After coming down to the road at Eldon Lane, it is easy to miss the footpath turn off the road after the railway bridge....

I walked this route from the south, and leaving Darlington was a long road but at least you can get away from the traffic and onto the grass. At Walworth I took a detour up the road to the excellent ice cream shop - well worth it if you have a sunny day like me (currently open 11 - 6)....

After this there were some steep ascents and descents before final climb into town centre. Enjoyable walk....

I did go into intrepid explorer mode a few times hacking away with my walking poles to clear away but this was not always possible....

The route then crosses 5 fields to the next farm, followed by a few hundred metres on a well made up track before its back in the fields again. This was the same south of the farm where the first field was flattened by farm vehicles (pic 9) but the second was very long meadow with no apparent path. A left turn on to a track takes you to Walworth Road, where there is 800 metres of road walking. Left takes you towards Crowford Farm, where an elaborate security gate allows you access, but the path south is a tough hack through long nettles and then long grass. The path from the lane to Low Walworth Farm is easy to follow and the farmer has kept the path well cut too. At the stile by the stream (pic 12) head left through farm buildings and once you reach the other side of the farm, the path passes an old barn and then out into the fields again. The next farm is a dairy farm and from just under a mile away there is electric fence bounded wide path that takes you towards the farm....

The routes starts at the functional bus station (pic 1) and quickly crosses town and drops down to the river, where there is an easy to miss path that follows the river (pic 2). The route is easy to follow except that the path down the side of the school is 300 metres further south. Back on the road, follow the route to the bridge and then a quick left and right brings you along a quiet road to the footpath (pic 8). A left turn and 300 metres along the road, a right turn takes on to a grassy path (pic 10)....
