There's no good alternative that I know of — we tried walking the road following the cycle route on the way back, but that's very fast and winding with lots of blind bends — not to be recommended!...

Once leaving the riverside, not long out of Llanilar, either walk through the farm to the road or bypass to the next farm. Issue at beginning and edge of Cnwch Coch, don't attempt to cross the fields using the public footpath as access to the fields is hard from the road (steep bank and no obvious access)....

Beautiful, easy to navigate Slow Way along the Ystwyth river valley, almost all via a well-signed, mostly off-road cycle path on flat or gently undulating ground with paved surfaces or easy gravel tracks....

An easy to follow route using the dismantled railway which is now a shared cycle/pathway. Nice views, flat route....

I found many of the paths on this route difficult to follow, Few are marked and some just fenced off or gates locked....

A really nice selection of different paths, starting with riverside, then farm tracks, then quiet back roads, then a lovely well used wooded walk, turning into presumably the old way to Devil's Bridge, judging by the tree-lined old road we walked alongside....

After village of Rhydyfelin is a picturesque and undulating short section through the woods before hitting a nice long sweeping flat section at base of valley pretty much all the way to Llanilar....
