Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It's 9 miles so a long one. Gradual incline up to Devil's Bridge. OS map is pretty usual as some of the paths aren't that well trodden. Only two issues to note:

1. Once leaving the riverside, not long out of Llanilar, either walk through the farm to the road or bypass to the next farm. The public footpath disappears in the first farm and crossing a large stream and fences isn't ideal.

2. Issue at beginning and edge of Cnwch Coch, don't attempt to cross the fields using the public footpath as access to the fields is hard from the road (steep bank and no obvious access). Walk down to the centre of the village, which is small, and simply walk along the past the chapel and cemetery, faster and clearer route to the same place on the eastern side of the village.

Route up to Devil bridge is pleasant and interesting. Reward at the Hafod hotel. Public toilets in Devils bridge too. It's a long route so you'll need to dedicate some time to it, but not at all taxing.

A really nice selection of different paths, starting with riverside, then farm tracks, then quiet back roads, then a lovely well used wooded walk, turning into presumably the old way to Devil's Bridge, judging by the tree-lined old road we walked alongside. A significant altitude gain up to the top, and then a little drop down to Devil's Bridge, where if it hadn't have been for picking up kids we'd have definitely stopped for a celebration in the nice redecorated Hafod Hotel.
Two tricky bits, one serious. You can't get through from the fields after the first farm, so I'll suggest going on to the next farm instead. We had to leap the stream and climb the fence.
And there's a bit that was quite overgrown getting through a gate, just after walking through a garden. Not too bad though.
Definitely need an OS map.

That photo with the Buddha head is disconcerting because you have to go right through someone's garden. I think the buddha is there to encourage you that you're welcome and on the right path!
