Help connect Freckleton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Freckleton’s Slow Ways.

From Newton with Scales to Lea Town the walking was mostly on minor roads without footpaths I really didn’t enjoy this part of the walk....

Walk this route

Lots of stiles make this route unsuitable for any wheeled transport but the path itself is fairly even and does not have very much in the way of steep assents or descents. The right of way near the windmill is through the owners garden, signposted and fairly obvious it is not quite as the map and goes between the windmill and the neighboring house not to the left of the windmill....

The road has quite a few cars using it, and also occasional buses, trucks and tractors....

Walk this route

The route follows this canal past a few locks, on a tarmacked cycle track, then crosses some pleasant housing to reach Ashton Park. After this there is Riversway Docklands, with some refreshment options, and then (via a level-crossing of a small heritage railway line) the cycle path alongside the River Ribble for most of the remainder of the route to Preston Station....

Walk this route

On leaving Freckleton, it is necessary to cross the busy dual carriageway A584 then walk alongside it on the grass verge until the footpath it spotted, hidden behind a tree. This takes you into open fields (which could be muddy) where the changed field boundaries mean the route has changed slightly, but it isn’t too bad to navigate if you look ahead for the crossing points. Another footpath takes you under a pylon to the busy A583 dual carriageway, which is a slightly tricky road to cross....

The plotted route then follows the road rather than the beach or the dunes, which makes it easier for wheels, although there is hard surfacing available around Fairhaven Lake closer to the beach. The route heads inland along a paved main road, then up some steps onto the first of two tidal-defence embankments, with a boatyard between them....

Apart from a few narrow sections, and traffic parking on pavements in Freckleton, it is wide enough to walk 2-a-breast. This route crosses a few major roads that are controlled by puffin crossings....

Walk this route

This is a walk of two halves, from Freckelton to Lytham is a bit of a slog along the main road, and from Lytham to St Annes it is excellent. Walking the route I was struck by the number of busses that passed me so if you’re not thrilled by such a long walk along a main road then a bus to Lytham could be an option. The footpaths were excellent, and there were plenty of road crossings (puffin). The route moves away from the main road in 2 places. It follows good foopaths to give interesting views over the Ribble estuary. Both paths require the use of steps up and down. The first loop also brings you into close proximity to cows. Cows graze in the area and do walk on the narrow earth bank the footpath follows....

Stearsb

Walk this route

The walk is very flat and very popular with walkers and dog walkers and so can be very busy until you get beyond the prom. At this point you will spend more time walking along a very busy road through Warton and onto Freckleton....
