Help connect Fleetwood

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Fleetwood’s Slow Ways.

The east side of Fleetwood, next to the Wyre Estuary, has a string of abandoned, flattened spaces where there used to be a railway line, and possibly buildings linked with the fishing industry. Unfortunately, this currently also involves crossing a track sometimes used by heavy vehicles, which have churned the crossing into two or three metres of unavoidable deep slushy mud. Apart from industrial buildings to the inland side this is really quite pleasant, and is used by walkers, with and without dogs....

This was a very pleasant and easy route across the fields and then down Whinny Lane to the lovely Hackensall Hall and then on to the golf course. Arriving at the coast, the tarmacked route to the ferry terminal is straightforward, with the Lake District becoming visible, far away....

The little ferry normally does the short return trip twice an hour in summer and once an hour in winter. There is a gentle slope down to the footpath which takes you inland, however the well-used footpath between a hedge and a fence (then hedge and drainage channel) is quite narrow....

The east side of Fleetwood, next to the Wyre Estuary, has a string of abandoned, flattened spaces where there used to be a railway line, and possibly buildings linked with the fishing industry. After this, the coastal Wyre Way is an exposed, gravelled path alongside the open marshes and estuary. Apart from industrial buildings to the inland side this is really quite pleasant, and is used by walkers, with and without dogs....

It is also possible to walk on the beach, or on the paved road some of the time. At the time I walked this, in winter, there had been a big storm which had brought pebbles, gravel and sand onto the path in places, but two separate locals assured me that this is not usually the case and the council would clear it quickly. Bizarrely, the route turns inland at this point, and follows the road for the last mile and a half....
