Fleetwood to Preesall 1 (Flepre 1) review.

A short Slow Way involving a ferry crossing, a walk beside the River Wyre, and footpaths into Preesall.

The route begins in Fleetwood with plenty of amenities and a tram link with Blackpool (Photo 1).

Check ahead for ferry times, which are dependent on the tide. The Knott End-on-Sea side has a Café that opens at 10am. There are convenience stores in the village (Photos 2 & 3).

A footpath south from the jetty follows the River Wyre. The route soon leaves the river for field paths eastwards. Recent heavy rain had made these rather muddy in places.

The final footpath emerges at Preesall; and the Slow Way ends at a bus stop near the Black Bull pub.

10 Jan 2022 Winter

A short distance from the village of Preesall the road gradually rises to cross a former railway line. The footpath sign onto this is a bit hidden by the hedge, but steps lead down onto the route. It was muddy but manageable when I walked it in the winter. This was a very pleasant and easy route across the fields and then down Whinny Lane to the lovely Hackensall Hall and then on to the golf course. The views here open out onto the Wyre Estuary and across to Fleetwood, with Blackpool Tower visible in the distance.
Arriving at the coast, the tarmacked route to the ferry terminal is straightforward, with the Lake District becoming visible, far away. There are coin-operated toilets in the car park, a café, an LS Lowry statue, and excellent birdlife (I saw turnstones and sanderlings quite close up) to keep you busy while you wait for the ferry.
The little passenger ferry normally does the short return trip twice an hour in summer and once an hour in winter. A bit of cash will be needed. Details are available at https://www.wyre.gov.uk/knott-end-fleetwood-ferry/knott-end-fleetwood-ferry-1/1 with updates (and a phone number) on their Facebook page, for which there is a link. However, when I arrived, the ferry was stuck at Fleetwood undergoing some emergency repairs, which was not announced on Facebook. I went back another day to complete my journey! The ferry was very nice, there was a gently sloping ramp, helpful staff, and the narrowest sections were wider than other parts of the route.
Overall a very pleasant and varied route.
