22 Dec 2021 (edited 01 May 2022)The east side of Fleetwood, next to the Wyre Estuary, has a string of abandoned, flattened spaces where there used to be a railway line, and possibly buildings linked with the fishing industry. These are surrounded by a high fence, and all along the water side of the fences is the path out of Fleetwood. It is sort of pleasant and interesting, but also feels a bit isolated, with no escape for over a kilometre. It also includes an unavoidable footbridge with 37 steps, and a fairly narrow section at one point. Soon after this, there is a long, straight, tedious road alongside the tramline, with many industrial units alongside it. There are many smells too – fish, motor repairs oily smells, cough sweets…
Towards the big roundabout onto the A585 the pavement ends and you need to follow FleTho Two to continue the route safely. This is slightly different from the Slow Ways route, map attached, but is fairly clear on the ground. Otherwise this roundabout will be difficult or even dangerous to negotiate.
It is a relief to leave the roads along a wooded, gravelled footpath which crosses the disused railway line to reach the coast. Unfortunately, this currently also involves crossing a track sometimes used by heavy vehicles, which have churned the crossing into two or three metres of unavoidable deep slushy mud. After this, the coastal Wyre Way is an exposed, gravelled path alongside the open marshes and estuary. Apart from industrial buildings to the inland side this is really quite pleasant, and is used by walkers, with and without dogs. There are benches dotted along here. The birdlife along here is pretty good, with flocks of oyster catchers, lapwings, curlew, plover and widgeon. The visitor centre has toilets for 30p, and apparently a café too. The roads into Thornton are the usual suburban type.
