Help connect Diss

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Diss’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

A big stretch of open fields with straightforward routes however many of these routes are not available due to the ongoing national grid works that are frequently changing which pathways are open. It sometimes came down to personal judgement whether to risk walking in a direction that we may be told to turn back on. Please see Thom's review for more detail on this problem....

Not a huge amount of variation in the landscape but a nice gentle stretch of our larger walk. Be sure to double check the navigation with Thom's previous comments as there is a couple of ways you could walk the wrong field....

Walk this route

The route follows along larger stretches of pavement and power lines, and parts of the larger farm fields can be tricky to cross in wet weather. Please be mindful of recommendations for slight adjustments to the suggested route, as proposed by former reviewer Thom Brisco....

Walk this route

Walking in rainy weather this had created smaller streams of water in parts of the footpath, making it slightly difficult to follow the route....

Walk this route

Walked in March 2024 as part of a longer trail, this portion of our journey was impacted by field path closures caused by ongoing works to the overhead national grid power lines. A 2 km long stretch was closed between Simpsons Maltings and Great Moulton, whilst a 700 m stretch was closed between Wash Lane and Wacton....

Walk this route

An enjoyable trail that prioritises the avoidance of roads and hard surfaces over the plot of a fastest route between the two towns....

Walk this route

Shortly after, you leave the road and join a footpath which takes you through some fields until Old Buckenham. After reaching Long Lane, you are suggested to make a right hand turn - there is a easily identifiable track, however the Slow Ways route suggests taking a left across a field to join some other path. (Green Lane) This brought me out at Heath Road, slightly further West of where the suggested route is. I turned left and walked along the road to rejoin the route. This next part is where I consider the biggest issue of the route to be - although there is a footpath marked from Heath Road, this is clearly not used often as it was not easy to follow, and this long stretch of walking along fields eventually reaches the perimeter of a farm - it was NOT clear which way I should be going, and I eventually arrived at a field marked with a 'bull in field' sign. The Slow Ways route suggests to then turn right and walk down Lodge Lane, however having checked Norfolk County council maps, this is indicated to be a PRIVATE road and should not be used. If you have reached Hall Road, the route suggests crossing directly over. The path then takes you into Winfarthing, and having left Winfarthing following a path, again the suggested route was quite tricky to follow. Although this was fine, when you reached far end of this path, it navigated round some stable fields, and the gate to rejoin the road had been padlocked and so had to be climbed over...

+ Largely avoids walking on roads, includes some lovely tree-lined bridleway, and pleasant footpaths including the valley between Yaxley and Eye. - The footpaths between Palgrave and Thrandeston include unkept stretches that often become overgrown with nettles and other tall plants...
