Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Long Stratton’s Slow Ways.

The route out of Loddon is simple and has good pavements and alternative options. The roundabout where the Mundham Road meets the A146 Norwich Road has a clear and simple place to cross out of Loddon....

The initial walk in Long Stratton takes you down the busy Swan Lane with no footpath, but once you leave the road and go off-road, that’s when the real adventure starts. Following the quiet roads takes you through Tharston, a small, quaint village....

Once finally bashing our way through the nettles, it was then on to walking through fields and farm land, with varying ease of what route to follow. The route was scenic but there were a couple of v muddy farm tracks to cross where farm animals had been (ps don’t anger the Cows!)....

Beyond this we encountered a lovely walk with woodlands and horses as we passed through the Redwings Horse Sanctuary. The ongoing National Grid works are likely to cause some diversions to this route until complete. Please see Thom's review for more detail on this....

A big stretch of open fields with straightforward routes however many of these routes are not available due to the ongoing national grid works that are frequently changing which pathways are open. It sometimes came down to personal judgement whether to risk walking in a direction that we may be told to turn back on. Please see Thom's review for more detail on this problem....

Leaving the little village of Long Stratton, we wandered in field paths as well as woodland areas. As parts of the route have not been maintained, it is recommended to look into former reviewer Thom Brisco’s suggestions for adjustments....
Tiril Sofie Berg
The route follows along larger stretches of pavement and power lines, and parts of the larger farm fields can be tricky to cross in wet weather. Please be mindful of recommendations for slight adjustments to the suggested route, as proposed by former reviewer Thom Brisco....

We were forced to take Parkes Lane through Low Tharston to rejoin the Slow Ways route....
Thom Brisco
Walked in March 2024 as part of a longer trail, this portion of our journey was impacted by field path closures caused by ongoing works to the overhead national grid power lines. A 2 km long stretch was closed between Simpsons Maltings and Great Moulton, whilst a 700 m stretch was closed between Wash Lane and Wacton....

The next off road segment is good until it requires a cut across a ploughed field to Pump Road for which the path has not been properly maintain by the farmer. The route out of Tharston is again not very good with a long stretch across the middle of large field, which where ploughed and not marked by the farmer with no clear marking of where to exit and not easy to walk on....

Turn left out of Tyrrels Wood Car Park and walk along the road until turning right at the next junction on to Hardwick Road....

Starting at Star Lane in Long Stratton, with nearby free parking, shops, pubs and public toilet. This goes through beautiful Oil Seed Rape field, but is narrow and can be avoided going up Hall Lane and turning onto Parkers Lane....
