Help connect Cloughton

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Cloughton’s Slow Ways.

This 21.7 mile walking route follows the former Scarborough to Whitby railway line, via Cloughton and Robin Hood's Bay (see Slow Ways Whirob and Robclo for the other two sections)....

Walk this route

This is a fairly straightforward walk which partly follows the Cleveland Way/England Coast Path, and partly the Cinder Track - the former railway line between Scarborough and Whitby. Before Long Nab, the Slow Ways route then tuns inland along a paved path (signposted to Burniston) to Field Lane, and then along The Cinder Track, skirting Burniston, to Cloughton....

Walk this route

This is a very straightforward route which is excellent for those who are not able to walk between Scarborough and Cloughton using the Cleveland Way which has some steep steps and therefore not easy for those who are less than steady on their feet. This is a route used by cyclists who sometimes pass a walker at speed which is rather unnerving. Unlike the Cleveland Way route, there are no sea views....

Join the Cinder Track from the Old Station in Robin Hood’s Bay. After the road crossing to Boggle Hole, the track has some very large potholes. Just before you get to Old Brick Works on the western side of track there is a very steep incline in excess of 1 in 2 (28 degrees). You restart the Cinder Track and continue southwards past the WW2 radar Station on the cliff top....

Walk this route

It's an old railway track so it doesn't have any really steep parts but it isn't flat and it is rough in places. It's popular with walkers, dog walker and cyclists but its a good track and I had no problems....
