Description
This route follows the NCR 1, the cinder track, from Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay.
It's an easy footpath with a reasonable surface that is suitable for wheels.
It's not as close to the sea so you don't get the views.
You have to cross a main road but it is traffic light controlled and there are a couple of gates. The surface is either asphalt or compacted cinders

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Oct 2024Cloughton to Scarborough 2 (Closca 2) review.
A Slow Way that takes an inland route between Cloughton and Scarborough.
Note: I walked Scarborough to Cloughton
The route starts at Scarborough Train Station, but soon joins the southern end of The Cinder Track. This 21.7 mile walking route follows the former Scarborough to Whitby railway line, via Cloughton and Robin Hood's Bay (see Slow Ways Whirob and Robclo for the other two sections).
The route Is tarmacked for almost the first half of the Slow Way, passing through parkland and residential streets. It becomes a rough track between conurbations. I found the route to be well signposted and mostly dry. Certainly, much less muddy than the coastal route proved to be in October!.

08 Sep 2023This is a very straightforward route which is excellent for those who are not able to walk between Scarborough and Cloughton using the Cleveland Way which has some steep steps and therefore not easy for those who are less than steady on their feet. This is a route used by cyclists who sometimes pass a walker at speed which is rather unnerving. Unlike the Cleveland Way route, there are no sea views. However, I often use this route and would recommend it for those who want a gentle, there and back again, stroll in the fresh air.

The from Cloughton village soon turns south onto the Cinder Track - NCR1 or EV1. The going is ‘cinders’ but relatively smooth. As you emerge into Scalby village the route is suburban until you rejoin the Cinder Track. The way thro’ the houses is way marked. Once on this section, the track including the old railway bridge has been upgraded to tarmac. It is very popular with families and dog walkers so if cycling keep watch full. The full route from Cloughton to Scarborough is wide enough for wheelchairs, push chairs or bike trailers. The are a couple of side road crossings but the way thorough is wide.
The end of the Cinder Track in Scarborough is near to Sainsbury’s then you are on side streets until you arrive at Scarborough Station.

09 Mar 2022A pleasant route that is easy and safe, with a few gates on route.
It's an old railway track so it doesn't have any really steep parts but it isn't flat and it is rough in places.
It's popular with walkers, dog walker and cyclists but its a good track and I had no problems.
