Help connect Brill

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brill’s Slow Ways.

But going to have to harsh, walked after a lot of rain and in a number of places between Brill and Blackthorn this route was water logged almost to the point of being impassable, worst then other slowways....

Be aware that the route of HS2 crosses paths between Waddesdon and Aylesbury Vale Parkway Station. Although it looks as if the path used for Briayl one will remain open, there may be some disruption until the line is completed....

Warning: The footpath between Waddesdon and Quainton is currently (2023) closed for HS2 construction works and will be for some years to come. Further details at https://buckinghamshire-gov-uk.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/Waddesdon_3_2tns9io.pdf....

I’d agree with the previous reviewer that walking in the opposite direction gives a more satisfying conclusion, finishing with great views from Brill over the surrounding countryside, however this leg was part of a longer journey so not possible for us and we concluded walking through the housing and commercial developments around Bicester....

I haven't flagged this route for safety, but please heed the warning above, and don't try this route in winter, or when the Cherwell is running high. One other point: I explored another route, which goes under the A34 where it crosses the Cherwell. Having got the route explanations out of the way, nearly all of this route is the same as Kidbri Two, so I've simply repeated the body of the text from that....

Definitely not one for wheels - there are several stiles, particularly nearer Brill, and the path is frequently muddy, even in summer. As you head out from Elsfield downhill towards Oxford, the odd doubling-back is required to cross a ditch, before you head to the Oxford Ring Road (where there are traffic lights, so you can cross safely)....

If you have a choice, I'd recommend doing this route from Bicester to Brill, rather than the other way round - the ascent into Brill is more picturesque than the approach to Bicester Village station and the town centre. In either direction, you'll have to cross the A41 between Bicester and the Ambrosden road. Also going from Brill to Bicester, approaching Ambrosden, the official route makes a diagonal cut through a new housing development...

The section along the B4495 (Marston Ferry Road) veers to the left (starting from Brill), and crosses the Cherwell some way from the road. Starting from Brill, there are impressive views, including the TV mast at Beckley, marking the approximate half-way point of the route. Shops are available in Brill itself, in Oakley, and the Oxford area. Tricky turns - Brill to Oxford1 As you leave Oakley Road, take the farm track (not the path). tricky turns - Oxford to Brill....

It is pretty nice, though there are a few places that I think would be difficult or impossible to pass in a wheel chair (a couple of small bridges [photo 2] that require a step up, a very steep stepless bridge and a section of path with big roots and no way around [photo 3]). Also the bit where a detour via the Victoria Arms adds two quite difficult road crossings (crossing Marston ferry and then crossing back to get to the pedestrian path on the side) as well as making the root longer, so I cut that off....

Large parts of the route are pretty straight, and go across fields, so there aren't too many tricky turns. Tricky turns - Brill to Thame. After crossing the Chilton-Chearsley road, the route skirts round Wombwell Farm2 Tricky turns - Thame to Brill....
