Help connect Basingstoke
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Basingstoke’s Slow Ways.

Excellent route, not sure what the access issues on Basalt one were, but this one benefits from being shorter, whilst still being scenic; crossing picturesque estates, woodland and farmers fields. There are a couple of stiles and kissing gates (the latter with wooden retractable boards for dogs to get through), and one stretch of track (White Lane, west of Weston Corbett) which is quite overgrown, but other than that, no significant issues. Happy to recommend and verify!...

A nice walk, initially through suburban paths and pavements and then through some lovely woodland before emerging onto a country lane....

A great traffic-free route between Kingsclere and Basingstoke, especially the paths and byways of the north Hampshire downs between Kingsclere and Worting on the edge of Basingstoke, with beautiful views of rolling countryside. Pubs, shops, cafes and bus links at both ends, but no facilities on route. The Vine pub at Hannington had closed down on my walk (August 2024)....

Basingstoke to Bramley 1 (Basbra 1) review. Bramley has a bakery café and The Bramley Inn; both near the train station....

It’s a route of three parts, the first section from Bramley train station to Cufaude is easy walking on pavements and then on-road on Cufaude Lane....

Walk this routeIt isn't the most inspiring walk coming out of Basingstoke - which takes 5 miles - hence only giving it 3 stars. We took a detour at the bottom of Dummer Down Lane, walking straight across Duxford Lane to go into Dummer Down Farm and have lunch at the Honesty Cafe. Another possible alternative would be to follow the Wayfarer's Way from Dummer to Duxford Lane, crossing it and following the permissive route which would link to a footpath taking you back to The Holt - again adding about 1/2 mile but cutting out over a mile of road. The path out of Blackwood still needs a detour - which was blocked by fly tipping just before Larkwhistle Farm Road. In summary, I'd walk from Dummer to Micheldever again (and have done most of it previously) but not from Basingstoke to crossing the M3....

The route starts at Micheldever Station (Photo 1). The Slow Way is supposed to leave the road for a private lane [SU531421]. It’s only a short detour to continue along the main road and reach the other end of the lane via a byway. The Slow Way leaves Dummer via a remarkably fancy stretch of the Wayfarer’s Walk (Photo 7)....

A walk across the SE corner of the North Wessex Downs AONB. There’s a moderate ascent up the escarpment (Photo 2) onto the North Wessex Downs. The route leaves the woods behind for fields (Photo 6) and a quiet lane....

Once out of Basingstoke there are great views south (Photo 1) while on a footpath below the railway. The route follows the river for a while (Photo 9) and then takes a footpath into Overton....

A straightforward walk south through woodland and fields, but bookended with urban stretches. There is then an excellent walk through the SW corner of the extensive Pamber Forest (Photo 1). There’s a break point at The Plough Inn (Photo 3) at Little London....

Most of the route is easy to navigate, with good paths either paved or through easy countryside....

The route then crosses open fields before joining roads passing through Oakley. The path is then followed to West Ham (Fire Station) Roundabout where a choice needs to be made, There is no underpass on the roundabout and if you walk round, only one joining road has a pedestrian crossing....

I walked this route from Basingstoke to Alton on Tuesday 10th August 2021 using GPS. The walk doesn't really start until you reach Hackwood Park (assuming you start at Basingstoke). And a very enjoyable start to the walk it is, with a variety of landscapes through the park. Alton and Basingstoke have train and bus stations....

I found the start (1.5 miles) very straightforward: from Basingstoke station you walk to Eastrop roundabout/lane, turn right onto Goat Lane, left on New Rd and left at the traffic lights. Enter the Memorial Park (photo 1 is the bandstand) on the right, follow the path on the right past the aviary and bandstand (photo 1) then take the underpass on the right opposite the playground....

The rest of the route is cross country with the last 1.25 miles on pavement through Tadley....

Following my review of the Hackwood Park to Weston Patrick section I intended to complete the route from Weston Patrick to Alton on Friday 2nd July. Before leaving Weston Patrick church, there is small plaque (photo 1) that could be easily missed as it is low down in the hedge to the left of the white wrought iron gates. On Long Lane Track the grass was long and wet (photo 2). I left the route here and returned to Weston Patrick via Lasham and shall return another day to complete the final section to Alton....

This review is of the Hackwood Park to Weston Patrick section of the route, about 6 miles. At 657498 the Slow Way route wants to take you along the track to Hackwood Farm but it is blocked by large straw bales (see photo) and a map on the fingerpost shows the Public Right of Way, which is the footpath to Tunworth....

It runs parallel to the railway to the Milestones roundabout and Winklebury, where it goes behind the FA football complex and Winklebury Centre....

I walked the second half of the route, from Wootton St Lawrence to Kingsclere (7 miles). Warren Bottom Copse was full of bluebells and the high ground between Hannington and Kingsclere opens up panoramic views and fantastic cloudscapes, particularly the thunderstorm that pursued me back from Kingsclere! The bench on the green in front of Hannington church is ideal for a drinks break and on arrival in Kingsclere the choice includes McColls, Spar, the Honesty Cafe and a pub....

Leaving Micheldever Railway Station the route is briefly on pavement along Overton Road before turning left onto Larkwhistle Farm Road for about ½ mile....
Barry Dale
At Worting the footpath continues around and under the railway arch and there is no need to walk on the road as suggested by the route. Instead cross the road and turn right on the multi-use track running alongside the railway. At Oakley you can cross the railway and continue on a footpath running along the right embankment but it is narrow and cyclists may prefer to stay on the road....
Duncan Reid
From Rectory Road the last 0.5 miles to the centre of Hook is on paved surfaces....

It's not exactly safe (#1) or off road (#5) for about 30% of the walk. So keep to the footpath on the right of the main road until you reach the Pamber Green sign, then cross....
