Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

03 Dec 2024I walked this route back in August 2024, as part of an extended Slow Ways walk from Farnham to Basingstoke. I had forgotten to review it, until I read the other two reviews. Both other reviews are correct; the main issues are the poorly defined foot paths around the rough grounds near the cricket club at the Hook end, and the blocked off path owing to the housing estate construction at the Basingstoke end. The latter can be easily rectified with a bit of road walking, so I can’t remember a suitable alternative for the former (I think the other reviewers have made some suggestions). While not an unpleasant walk, these issues make it hard for me to recommend this route.

02 Jul 2022Most of the route is easy to navigate, with good paths either paved or through easy countryside. There is currently (until September 2022) a short diversion near Old Basing where they are building new houses but the sign is very clear and the route is fine. The section past the cricket club through Hook Common, however, is absolutely terrible and nigh on impossible - there are no clear paths and the ground is really uneven. It would be much better to remain on the pavement alongside the A30 (don’t turn right onto the A287 at the Hogget, instead cross over and continue straight on the A30), and then pick up the footpath off the road a little way down. Once past that section, the route becomes residential and is easy to navigate.

04 May 2021From Basingstoke Railway Station the first 3 miles to Hatch are paved and easy to walk. The next 3.5 miles are easy cross-country walking with cultivated stretches sticky underfoot after overnight rain and several stiles and gates to be negotiated. On Hook Common, between Hook & Newham Basic Cricket Club and Rectory Road, the path is totally undefined and is across very boggy ground. From Rectory Road the last 0.5 miles to the centre of Hook is on paved surfaces. This route is not suitable for wheelchair or similar transport.
