No refreshments or shops on route, but shops, pubs, cafes at both ends, buses at Kingsclere and train/bus connections at Newbury....
Berkshire Walker
A great traffic-free route between Kingsclere and Basingstoke, especially the paths and byways of the north Hampshire downs between Kingsclere and Worting on the edge of Basingstoke, with beautiful views of rolling countryside. Pubs, shops, cafes and bus links at both ends, but no facilities on route. The Vine pub at Hannington had closed down on my walk (August 2024)....
Berkshire Walker
At around the 1.5km mark, a small section of the Brenda Parker Way was overgrown causing us to divert to the road for a short distance. Apart from that, all the other trails were fine and good to see a more solid bridge now built over the stream on Sydmonton Common....

A walk across the SE corner of the North Wessex Downs AONB. There’s a moderate ascent up the escarpment (Photo 2) onto the North Wessex Downs. The route leaves the woods behind for fields (Photo 6) and a quiet lane....
Martin Ellis
It follows the River Test to its source at Ashe (Photo 1) and across fields into Deane. A footpath leads through the northern edge of Great Deane Wood (Photo 4); a welcome relief from the heatwave....

A walk from Newbury in Berkshire across into Hampshire; taking in Greenham Common, fields and woodland to arrive at Kingscleve on the edge of the North Wessex Downs. The route leaves the lane for footpaths across fields to eventually join the Brenda Parker Way (a long-distance path across Hampshire, Photo 4). The route soon leaves the Way for a more direct path into Kingsclere (Photo 5)....

The walk crosses the river into Berkshire and then through fields and woods to finish in Thatcham on the Kennet & Avon Canal. The walk into Thatcham was the same route as Thatcham to Tadley (see Thatad 1): a mixture of tarmacked lanes and wooded footpaths. The Slow Way crosses the River Kennet and Kennet & Avon Canal, passes the train station, and there’s an urban walk into the centre of town. There’s a footpath to the west (SU528644) which provides a more direct N-S route into Thatcham, as well avoiding the Crookham Common Road walk....
Martin Ellis
The route leaves the Wayfarer’s Walk along a footpath south. The route continues south along a farm lane and then a narrow footpath (Photo 7). Lanes, and finally a footpath, lead SW into the centre of Whitchurch....

Kingsclere to Tadley (Kintad 1) review. A Hampshire Slow Way through woods past a nature reserve, followed by country lanes. The route briefly joins the Brenda Parker Way (a long-distance path across Hampshire) through woods; but soon turns south at the corner of the Ashford Hill nature reserve (Photo 2). The route southwest towards Kingsclere alternates between wide footpaths past fields and woods, and tarmacked lanes (Photos 3 & 4)....

Shortly after leaving Tadley Post Office the route turns right off Mount Pleasant. Towards the bottom of the hill the route turns right into pastures, passing round some houses before coming out on the A339....

Ursula added Newbkin three, a new walk from Newbury to Kingsclere
Walk this routeThe route crosses the road to continue across Greenham Common on mainly gravel tracks popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists. On exiting the Common there is a small section of road to follow (no pavement) to reach the path across Sydmonton Common....

It runs parallel to the railway to the Milestones roundabout and Winklebury, where it goes behind the FA football complex and Winklebury Centre....

I walked the second half of the route, from Wootton St Lawrence to Kingsclere (7 miles). Warren Bottom Copse was full of bluebells and the high ground between Hannington and Kingsclere opens up panoramic views and fantastic cloudscapes, particularly the thunderstorm that pursued me back from Kingsclere! The bench on the green in front of Hannington church is ideal for a drinks break and on arrival in Kingsclere the choice includes McColls, Spar, the Honesty Cafe and a pub....
