Help connect Abergele
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Abergele’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates
An enjoyable route with varying views and terrain but with some overgrown and very muddy sections which made walking a challenge at times....

As we approach the substation, the route and OS maps suggest heading into the field past the gate, but instead turn left, keeping the fence (and massive pile of dumped wood etc) on the right, before heading over a footbridge into more fields. At the end, a stile into an empty caravan park (it was out of season when I walked this!), and once we're through, a little footbridge brings us onto the main road....

At the time of walking it, it was passable but I would love to hear how someone else got on walking it in a couple of months time. The good thing is that a lot of the paths seems to have had their vegetation trimmed back so hopefully this continues....

We left the tiny city of St Asaph along some quiet roads, although there was a very short section (250 metres) of the B5381 with no pavement from the roundabout to the turnoff which was not so pleasant. The next footpath, along the side of some woods near Abergele Hospital, was more pleasant, and we eventually emerged, over a river footbridge, into the outskirts of Abergele, and followed a riverside path all the way to the main road and the end of the route. With the exception of the Sheep Wash track and a tiny bit of B5381 near St Asaph, I found this a very pleasant route....

Apart from some very lazy plotting, I could see from OS satellite view and Google Street Views, that it is totally wrong in two places, so I didn’t even need to try walking it to fail it! You would need to be able to fly over the quarry just west of St George, and the Kinmel Arms (see screenshot of satellite view). Shortly after this, you would need to pass through locked gates with “Private Property” signs and walk 2.5k through the grounds of the privately owned Kinmel Estate, which has no Public Right of Way....

From the centre of Abergele (shops, bus stops), we head gradually uphill along a residential road which eventually crosses the railway, and we join the path alongside the coast, which is a good concrete/tarmac path....
Hiking Historian
The footpath is gated at certain times of the day, and, once we get to the footbridge over the railway, the route is supposed to go ahead between caravan park and the railway, but no such footpath exists: it's a ghost on OS maps....

An easy walk, mainly tarmac or promenade. Part of North Wales Coast path and National Cycle route...

A really easy and enjoyable route which was great for bringing the dog along as the path is fenced and away from the road. Nice views of the coastline and amenities available on route, bus route runs along side the route so can be used as an alternative if needed....

Got caught in a squall when I walked this two weeks ago but took shelter in the very welcoming Castle View cafe just west of Abergele....

A large portion of Abekin Three follows the Wales Coastal Path, North Wales Path and National Cycle Route No.5, and cycling is actively encouraged throughout. If using public transport, regular busses link the start and end points, or if like me and using trains, it is possible to walk from Rhyl to Abergele, crossing off two SlowWays in the process....

I only walked about half of this route, from Llanddulas to Old Colwyn, but I have walked all the way from Abergele to Colwyn Bay a couple of times previously....
Paddy Dillon
In my view the detour across the railway either side of Abergele & Pensarn is both pointless and involves unnecessary and unavoidable flights of steps to cross the line east of the station, and the route into Kinmel Bay is not as simple as the one in ABEKIN 3. Updated 11/12/23 to flag the route as per Hiking Historian's review comments....
Hugh Hudson
The route into Kinmel Bay leaves the coast path at a refreshment hut and passes a large Asda car park....

Hugh Hudson added Abekin three, a new walk from Abergele to Kinmel Bay
Walk this routeAlmost a very good route, let down a little by the plotting of the route out of Colwyn Bay (you can't take that straight line across the A55) and unnecessary detours at each end. I walked 90% of it but used the shorter COLABE 2 routes out of Colwyn Bay and into Abergele. I will add a more detailed review with pictures there....
Hugh Hudson
An easy direct route, entirely on the surfaced coast path/cycle track apart from a little pavement walking at either end. In Pensarn the track follows the side of the road through a holiday park, and a shortcut path takes us up to the bridges over the railway and the A55....
