Description
There is nothing seriously wrong with COLABE 1, but its plotting is a bit loose and the routes into/out of both Colwyn Bay and Abergele can be shortened. I walked this route today, and it works, and is fully paved with no steps or stiles, though there are some very minor diversions due to flood barrier work south east of Colwyn Bay

27 Oct 2023I only walked about half of this route, from Llanddulas to Old Colwyn, but I have walked all the way from Abergele to Colwyn Bay a couple of times previously. I'd just had a pub lunch in Llanddulas and walked down Beach Road to link with the Wales Coast Path for an afternoon walk. It's an obvious, easy to follow tarmac path, but as it's shared between walkers and cyclists, it's a good idea to keep to one side (preferably right) and keep a lookout for cyclists. The coastline is either rock-shielded or protected by thousands of concrete 'dolos'. Every so often, the path rises a little, then drops afterwards... first to pass a low cliff, then to cross a conveyor belt at Raynes Jetty, then to pass the partly quarried Penmaen headland. All this is on a tarmac path, then the route follows an older concrete sea wall. I had to head inland to Old Conwy as at the time of my walk (October 2023) the promenade leading to Colwyn Bay was closed for construction work. I'm sure it will be a splendid job when finished, especially seeing what's been done further along the promenade at the site of the old Victoria Pier.

04 Jul 2023 (edited 05 Jul 2023)Walked from Colwyn Bay to Abergele. An easy direct route, entirely on the surfaced coast path/cycle track apart from a little pavement walking at either end. Some fine views. A little noisy thanks to the proximity of the A55.
From Colwyn Bay station, we take the path east that crosses the A55 under a bridge, then cross the road and turn right along the promenade. Note that part of the promenade is currently closed to cars but a path/cycle track has been kept open just above the closed road.
At one point work at a stream mouth briefly forces us back under the A55 under another bridge, but beyond this there is no further disruption, and we can follow the surfaced track all the way to Pensarn beach. There is one prominent headland which is worth the extra few steps for the views. Further on there are some fairly steep ups and downs. In Pensarn the track follows the side of the road through a holiday park, and a shortcut path takes us up to the bridges over the railway and the A55.
We could follow Sea Road all the way into Abergele, but the small detour through the park offers a change of scenery. The meeting point is across Market Street by the library. A pleasant accessible walk, very easy to navigate.
