A good route out of town through Landsbury Park, then just a short section along the busy and noisy Distributor Road, before peace and calm is restored on Old Bedwas Road. After the section through Bedwas village and the old mine workings area, Ty Canol Lane is a good test of the lungs....

Nice walk from Caerphilly that starts off in the town centre, so you can take a look around the castle if you want before heading on. The route is clearly marked by signs along most of the route through the town. Once you get to Ty-Canol Lane get ready for the gentle walk to get pretty steep though as you will be climbing up non-stop until you hit the ridge line and the cairn up top....

It covers part of the Sirhowy Valley Walk, the Rhymney Valley Ridgeway Walk and the Taff Vale Extension path. Leaving Ynysddu and passing through the tunnel under the railway line cycle path, there is a steep climb up to the Sirhowy Valley Walk, which at this point passes through woodland and forestry, steadily climbing upwards. The first part of the walk is not suitable for wheeling, due to the rough ground (in parts) and kissing gates, but the section along the cycle path from Maesycwmmer to Ystrad Mynach is good for wheels of all types....

A short and easy walk along the Sirhowy Valley Country Park path, but also taking in Gelligroes Mill and the Tram Road, which takes you into Pontllanfraith....

After a short walk through Risca from the station, the path goes under the A467 by-pass to Dan-y-Graig and through a small nature reserve (Photos 1 & 2). However, the path out of the reserve was blocked, so I went back down on to the lane, turned right and followed Tir-y-Cwm Lane right to the end, then turned right at the junction with the lane coming up from Ochrwyth....

1) Leaving Bedwas, when you leave the road just past the church, there are 2 paths. On the OS map it looks like you should veer right towards the houses but instead take the left fork. There’s a network of footpaths following an embankment - try and stick to the north side of it until Tŷ-Canol Lane. 2) There are several unmarked bike trails in the forest above Ynysddu, which makes map-reading tricky As long as you head downhill, you can’t get seriously lost....

This route is easy to navigate and follows good paths....

Takes you past Gelligroes mill where the SOS signal from the Titanic was picked up and then down the old railway line to Ynysddu. Some nice views over the Sirhowy valley....

I've uploaded a new route that shows the route I eventually did to get through, takes a bit longer but I couldn't see any alternative. Also, the new route avoids Lansbury Park, one of Wales' most notorious housing estates....

grifftinfoilhat added Caeyny two, a new walk from Caerphilly to Ynysddu
Walk this routeThe climb out of Ynysddu is very steep and can get very muddy but worth it for views across the channel to Somerset. The area is very popular with trial bikes and scramblers who go downhill at ridiculous speeds. You can hear them coming a mile off but be aware....

It remains a public right of way on the OS map, but no longer appears on the caerphilly council definitive map. There's pretty definitive No Entry and No Right of Way signs up there too, so I wouldn't recommend trying it. I've created another route that uses the nearby Manager's Lane down to Wyllie that then joins the Sirhowy valley walk to Ynysddu....
