Latest Updates

A lot of it follows route 47 cycle path and quite a bit of this is along the Sirhowy Valley Line path, which is a very gradual gradient going up the valley. For an even better 5-star route, you could go straight up Mill Street from Risca station and join the 47 cycle route at the canal....

After going up the steps just after the tunnel, the route joins a footpath to the right, which then appears to follow a right of way (as shown on the OS map) along or near the bottom of the mountain, but the path eventually runs out. The alternative route leads up to the forestry track, which then leads back on to the right of way at the bottom of the mountain before joining the Raven Way, which then goes up the mountain to Mynyddislwyn....

Easy to follow but a bit tiresome walking alongside a busy road for quite a way. The viaduct is impressive...

The highlight of the walk is the Hengoed Viaduct - worth taking some time out to explore it from underneath from Hengoed station....

It then opens up into a meadow (Photo 3), which is part of the Sir Harold Finch Memorial Park. After crossing the busy Blackwood Road / Libanus Road junction, the path leads through another small park (Photo 4), after which it`s just a short stretch through the back streets to Blackwood bust station....

Half of it is on the lanes and footpaths between Newbridge High Street and the dual carriageway by-pass road, the other half along the main road between Pentwynmawr and Pontllanfraith. The path then runs through some woodland (Photo 2), fields and more woodland before emerging in a small car park (Photo 3), from which it`s just a short hop to the High Street at Pentwynmawr. From there, it`s a straightforward walk along the main road all the way to the cross roads at Pontllanfraith (Photo 4)...
