Help connect St Andrews
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of St Andrews’s Slow Ways.

However, the route suggested is a little outdated - especially over the Ceres river where, unfortunately (due to the storms of the past season I think) the bridge is no more....

Beautiful views of the Isle of May and Firth of Forth dominate the first sections, before turning inland for walk through peaceful farmland. The last section is a sometimes tricky up and down along the Coast Path again, with views over St Andrews towards Tentsmuir. The section before turning down into Kingsbarns is along an old railway line and is absolutely beautiful. Turning off to Kingsbarns the path is a little overgrown (see pictures) and can be rough in places under the grass. After heading though Kingsbarns, before heading down onto the Coast Path again there is another section along a busy road. The final section is along the Coast Path and has beautiful views of rock formations and the West Sands at St Andrews....

I think it would be better the other way round, the St Andrews end of the path is quite demanding and would have been a better start than finish. If you wanted a longer walk you could drop down onto the Path from Crail which would take you round Fife Ness and add approx an extra 2 miles / 3.2km onto your route. Beyond Buddo Ness, round Kinkell Ness and along Kinkell Braes the path runs alongside a steep escarpment. This is the second time I've walked it, both times from Crail to St Andrews because buses from St Andrews are more frequent than those from Crail so I knew I wouldn't have long to wait to get home....

Walk this routeThis is the last stage of the Fife Pilgrim Way, a long distance route from Dunfermline to St Andrews promoted by the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (https://fifecoastandcountrysidetrust.co.uk/walks/fife-pilgrim-way/ceres-to-st-andrews/). It's a clear, well waymarked path with good views. Food and drink is available in Craigtoun Country Park (10km)....

I would suggest following the path along the station road rather than Main St as there is no path along main street and you will be walking along a 40mph road with military traffic. Other than that, the route is paved all the way! Great coffee spot in Guardbridge for a stop along the way!...
