Help connect Sale
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Sale’s Slow Ways.

Walk this route regularly, this is a flat canal-side path that is paved/stoned the entire way....

Very nice walk, however, I did it on a really heavy rainy day and in areas access was difficult or restricted for wheelchairs or prams due to broken gates or heavy muddy patches. Leaving Didsbury station theres a walk uo Wilmslow road turning onto the river mersey across the large and busy Withington golf club, continue along teh river Mersey past Fletchers Moss FC, across princess, parkway onto Chorlton Water Park, lovely spot. Keep going to Trafford Watersports Park, tricky access then to cross the M60 via teh footbridge. Along Dane road then onto Sale Station. 3 stars because of access problems in spots....

At the Altrincham end there was a towpath diversion at the time, so I was forced to take the suggested re-route along Viaduct Road, and it was fine....

The lazy plotting of the towpath access at Sale irritates me, especially as it was so well plotted at Stretford....

This route has a pleasant start along quiet suburban streets in Sale and along a brook (Baguely Brook) and path to Wythenshawe Park. We wondered if it might work better to walk down into the Sharston business park and into Gatley along Longley Lane - we plan to try that option next time. However this was not a pleasant experience and it may be possible to take a different route through Sharston Business Park and along Longley Lane....

t was a good walk, I had no idea how easy it was to get from Urmston to Sale in this amount of time by walking. The church on the way was beautiful but we had to go through some roads that spoiled the walk a little....

A very nice and relaxing walk. Passes a nice horse paddock and golf courses, the pathways are clearly layed out and accessible. I would walk this route again for sure!...

Not a bad little walk. Partly country side and partly town centre. Easily accessible from Urmston station then some road and streets mostly flat with access ramps for wheelchairs. Opens up to countryside after a short while with equestrian facilities and horse shop! Leads to interesting walks in tree lined pathways. Mostly flat for bikes and pushchairs to access too. Passes by a weir which is nice with water flowing and a steel bridge walkway over. The bridge has a small ramp to access it. You would also later pass a quaint old village church on a cobblestone street which is worth a photo or selfie or two. Later in the walk you will reach Sale town centre which is great to stop at for a coffee and snack or a meal if you like. Sale train station is then easily accessible for your return journey or onward travel. I would say this should be a safe day route to take and would recommend...

Nice accessible very nice and flat a good day out for all I would definitely go again with my family...

Loved this route! The strip along the canal was great and very accessible. There are cafes at the start and finish and even a boat cafe halfway down! I would definitely recommend to others, singles, couples, kids and even dogs....

Easy towpath route, mostly very even, shared with cycles. Close to tram stops at Sale and Stretford....

Step free access to canal path via viaduct road as metnioned before if you prefer to avoid steps. With this adjustment ideal for buggy or bike. Significant amount of walk along pavements at Altrincham end of walk...

Leaving Urmston, the route passes a horse paddock and takes in some countryside before emerging into Ashton-on-Mersey and a suburban walk to Sale, where you will find a lovely town centre....

The walk is very long started at 10am and finished at 13:32 so it’s a good 3 hours and a half walk and some of the walkways aren’t very good with like bricks and stones on one section of the Mersey but if you need a drink or food there’s many shops in gatley and sale and along the route such as Jackson’s boat and the good clubs I didn’t encounter any problems for walking after the walk you feel a sense of achievement and can treat yourself to a chippy afterwards like I did...

Easy to avoid the only flight of steps from the canal to the A56 by exiting the canal at Viaduct Road if approaching from Sale (look out for Kickback Coffee). Smooth surfaces the whole way, very direct and easily negotiable by buggy - hard to imagine a better route....

Overall this walk is very pleasant, along the River Mersey and Sale Water Park....

Pedestrians, cyclists, kids, dogs and geese all share the space, and there's a pub about 1/3 of the way out of Sale, by Dane Road, if you need a break....

Dogs generally need to go on a lead because of all this, unless you're confident they're well behaved (mine has a habit of getting under the feet of joggers!)...

Nice route, generally along the canal towpath but with crossing of the busy Edge Lane at Stretford. Shallow ramps down to and up from the canal towpath at each end....
Philip Chandler
A simple route, but there is a flight of steps from the retail park down to the canal side. A better route would be along Viaduct Road, around 40 metres north of the turn to get on to the canal. The connection from the A56 through the retail park to the canal path is a little bit tricky and narrow....

Unfortunately, the canal doesn't go into Altrincham and there are a couple of options for walking the final section after Timperley. These sections are not off road. It is a busy, well used route, which is shared with cyclists....

A slight alternative which involves walking along the river is to turn right off Ashton Lane onto park Rd, left at the end onto Glebelands Rd and right to Little Ees Lane. Then walk along the rive to the footbridge mentioned in the description. Both good routes just slightly different....

Short easy route, all apart from the first 300 m are along the Bridgewater Canal towpath. No steps, ramps to and from the canal. Pedestrian crossing across busy road near Stretford Tram Stop....
