Description
This alternative route is a result of a Slow Ways blog which asked if the 50 least direct routes might attract more users if they could be made shorter.
https://beta.slowways.org/Stories/Page/michael-tormey-how-direct-are-the-slow-ways-routes-really
This route is a lot more urban than Salgat One but it does manage to take in a green footpath along the Baguely Brook and Wythenshaw Park.
Eating / Shops:
Short row incl convenience store and chippy on junction with Norris Rd about 1.5 km
Cafe in Wythenshawe Park near the middle of the route.
Supermarket at 6km
Over night stays:
None directly on the route but Google shows several within 15 minutes or so, some under £50.
Salgat One is particularly long because it diverts from the urban areas to follow what looks like a really pleasant route along the winding banks of the River Mersey. It is possible to adapt that route and find something shorter. In that case there are several shops and eating places around the Knebworthy Lane / Palatine Road juncton

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Jun 2023This route has a pleasant start along quiet suburban streets in Sale and along a brook (Baguely Brook) and path to Wythenshawe Park. The park is a large green open space and was quiet when we walked it on a hot Sunday in June. There is a serviceable cafe with open access toilets near the old hall in the park. Unfortunately the section from Wythenshawe Park takes the walker along the A560 and over the M56. Although this is a short section before dropping back into suburban streets on the approach to Gatley, it detracted significantly from the pleasure of this walk. We wondered if it might work better to walk down into the Sharston business park and into Gatley along Longley Lane - we plan to try that option next time.
Most of the route involves pavements or paved paths. The section along Baguely Brook is a narrow footpath on a slight incline that would make it difficult for walkers with restricted mobility or wheelchair users. As this path emerges close to Wythenshawe tram stop, the route goes along the edge of the tramway for a very short distance, which seemed safe enough but care needed if trams are approaching.
Walking through Wythenshawe Park, you need to take a track along the edge of the running track and across to the footpath which then leads on to the Old Hall. Emerging from the park take the path/roadway in front of the houses and then under the subway to cross the roundabout at the top of the A560. After continuing along the pavement next to the A560 and over the railway and M56, it is possible to cross the road to walk around the Sharston roundabout. However this was not a pleasant experience and it may be possible to take a different route through Sharston Business Park and along Longley Lane.
The approach to Gatley along Altrincham Road was not too busy on a Sunday. We stopped in Gatley Recreational Ground for a short rest, but the centre of Gatley is well appointed with a variety of pubs, restaurants and a Co-Op.

27 Jun 2023Glad you enjoyed it. Except the motorway bit, sorry about that. I hadn't tested many Slow Ways then, I was too keen to make a short route but wouldn't choose it now.
I looked at other options back then and there is an even earlier turn off onto Netherwood Road then a few turns on residential streets up to the footpath between Penarth Rd and Bradnor Rd - inside the business park. It's a bit fiddly but hopefully more bearable.
