Help connect Rowlands Gill

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Rowlands Gill’s Slow Ways.

You join the main Derwent Walk at the edge of the village. A short stretch of footpath through some housing and a short walk on pavement takes you to the destination....

Walk this route

There is a cycle path and road that could be used to get from Rowlands Gill to Blaydon, but this route is in keeping with Slow Ways spirit and takes in some less frequently walked paths. The route follows the busy A694 north east out of the village, but then joins the Sustrans Route 14 cycle path which follows the line of the valley all the way to the River Tyne. The route then zig-zags right off the track and then cuts back left over the track you have just left and then climbs steeply back to the A694. The path climbs out of the small estate along the back of the houses and then at the crossroad of paths turn right and follow the field boundary....

Two hazards on route - section of official route from Pont Low Top wood isn't a path so divert west by 2-300 metres to rejoin at South Field Farm - correct path clearly shown on OS Map. 400metres of path closed just north of Hamsterly Hall - be prepared for steep and complicated route find through the woods (see pic 11). The route is easy to follow and the slow walk up the well made up track (see pic 3) to Low Bradley Farm is rewarded with a great view across the valley to the site of the north east's last open cast mine working. Easy navigation in Pont Woods (pic 8) takes you down to the stream, but then the official route follows the line of pylons out of the valley which can't be followed on foot. Once I was at the B6310, I was already aware that there is no path from the official route under the viaduct up to the long distance Consett to Swalwell C2C cycle path! An interesting walk through the Pont Valley which is much more interesting than if the route had followed the C2C route from Consett to Rowlands Gill....

A straight forward route with minimal navigation. Worth dropping down off the route to get a view of the viaduct....

View facilities

This route is an easy walk between Whickham and Rowlands Gill, completely out of the way of any cars, through wonderful countryside. Can be a little muddy in places after wet weather so wear appropriate shoes. If you like you can also take a detour across the Butterfly bridge to wander around Derwenthaugh country park and Clockburn lake to watch the red kites....
