Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Rowlands Gill to Whickham on February 19th. The path seems to disappear every now and again on the first stretch out of the village but navigation is easy enough. You join the main Derwent Walk at the edge of the village. This is a busy path for walkers and for cyclists. There are occasional fine views through the trees all along this route. A gentle gradient takes you across a viaduct then up a steep incline through the trees towards an open field. This is the muddiest part of the route. You are soon back on a well made track which leads you to the village of Whickham. A short stretch of footpath through some housing and a short walk on pavement takes you to the destination. A very nice walk - especially in the sunshine.

Echoing Andy's comments. A straight forward route with minimal navigation. Worth dropping down off the route to get a view of the viaduct.

You can't beat the Derwent walk. This route is an easy walk between Whickham and Rowlands Gill, completely out of the way of any cars, through wonderful countryside. Can be a little muddy in places after wet weather so wear appropriate shoes. If you like you can also take a detour across the Butterfly bridge to wander around Derwenthaugh country park and Clockburn lake to watch the red kites.
