Help connect Whickham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Whickham’s Slow Ways.

You join the main Derwent Walk at the edge of the village. A short stretch of footpath through some housing and a short walk on pavement takes you to the destination....

I walked this route from Whickham to Blaydon on February 19th. Not much to add to the previous review. I was glad to be starting in Whickham though as I could walk down the steep hill...

I walked this route in two halves on separate days starting on the Coach Road in Lobley Hill each time, but the review is written from Whickham to Kibblesworth. The route follows the road and as you reach the first house in Lobley Hill, bear right on to a path runs steeply down into the Beggarswood Park (pic 11). Turn right on to the Coach Road and follow the road south as it runs next to the A1. This has a path along its perimeter that follows the road that offers much better views than the footpath on the road (pic 14). * the road section west of Lobley Hill can be avoided by using the tracks through Watergate Park to the school and the drop down to the road, crossing at the much safe central refuge...

This route follows the B6316 north out of Sunniside along the road starting at the Methodist Church (pic 1). There are off road options that could be explored in a new route as suggested by a previous reviewer, but no reason in my view this shouldn't be one of two or more routes between Sunniside and Whickham....
Andy Redfern
Stay on the left hand side and follow the path which in a couple of places can be followed away from the road itself (pic 1). Opposite the rugby club, use the central refuge to cross the road then stay on the right hand side past the entrance to Derwent Country Park (pic 3). At the traffic lights at the top of the hill, cross safely on to the left side of the road as you head into the urban village of Whickham....

There are some fast-moving roads to cross once you near the Reudgheuh Bridge but these can be avoided by walking underneath the bridge....

Full disclosure I did the first part from Whickham to Dunston, (the junction of Wellington Road and St Omers Road) the previous day as it shares the route with Whigat one and Whinew two. You then cross a new housing development to road and follow road crossing the River Team....

Full disclosure I did the first part from Whickham to Dunston, (the junction of Wellington Road and St Omers Road) the previous day as it shares the route with Whigat one and Whinew one. When you get to the bottom you then have a somewhat uninspiring walk through the town of Dunston until you get to the river....
Philip Le Marquand
The road past what was the Gas Works is ok but I would suggest a better route would be to cut down to Dunston Staithes and walk along the river then rejoin the path through Gateshead Riverside Park....
Philip Le Marquand
The road to Lamesley is via a footpath along the road which is easy going. I then walked along the coach road which sadly meant walking on the road as there is no footpath....
Philip Le Marquand
Combination of urban pathways, uneven ground in park areas and some steep inclines. Probably not the best walk to attempt in the dark or low light as some areas are unlit and others are alongside busy roads. There are no toilets or shops along the route, just at the start & the endpoints....
Clackas
Did not feel safe the first part of this route, as it goes over one of the busy road bridges. Although you have a barrier between you and the road, you are sharing a narrow space with cyclists. Once down beside the river, and onwards it was a pleasant enough walk....

Marion Frankland added Whinew two, a new walk from Whickham to Newcastle
Walk this routeA straight forward route with minimal navigation. Worth dropping down off the route to get a view of the viaduct....

This route is an easy walk between Whickham and Rowlands Gill, completely out of the way of any cars, through wonderful countryside. Can be a little muddy in places after wet weather so wear appropriate shoes. If you like you can also take a detour across the Butterfly bridge to wander around Derwenthaugh country park and Clockburn lake to watch the red kites....

This is a terrible route, it is not a Slow Way at all, it simply follows the road. There is a lovely route over the fields through Marshall's farm. Go that way instead....
