Help connect Rampton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Rampton’s Slow Ways.

Here we turn left and follow the road to Catchwater Drain. From here, we follow the east bank of the Drain all the way to the Trent. The West Burton power stations loom ever closer as we pass Sturton-le-Steeple, and the path bends to the east to follow the Drain. The riverside path past the power station is not clearly marked - it s probably easiest to descend the bank (unless the river is flooded) initially, then follow River Road. This path is well enough used to be easy to follow (but can be short-cut by staying on the bank - see RamGai two)....

Walk this routeMost of it is good, but there are a couple of errors in the GPX plotting and one path that is subject to a closure order, so I will submit a fixed version that works better and write a more detailed review of the new route....

The path from Ingram Lane is quite well trodden, but has a few steps where it crosses the outer flood bank, and one gateway that was a little muddy even after a long sunny spell and may be worse after heavier rain. The flood bank carries a very well trodden path. Beyond this road we enter a quieter stretch of the river, passing a former viaduct that led out from the Marnham power station but now ends short of the river, a deep ditch which forces a short detour left over a little bridge, then the main Fledborough Viaduct (which is definitely not accessible from the riverside path without a trespass to the embankment east of the viaduct). Beyond the main road the flood bank path has metal kissing gates rather than stiles, but it becomes quieter as we approach Church Marnham, where the path leaves the barrier to exit the corner of the field by the churchyard....

Walk this routeNo major issues, though the path from Meetinghouse Lane to Wood Lane is little used which makes it quite hard work to follow. Beyond the houses there should be two paths - the left hand one is easy to follow along the edge of horse fields, but the owners are clearly trying to stop people using the more direct right hand one - one stile was the only remaining trace of it, so I opted for the slightly longer field path and amended the GPX accordingly. We turn left down Town Street, passing the pub, then left again onto Church Street and right onto Meetinghouse Lane, which is almost unused beyond the houses. Above the church we take the lane right, which leads past farm buildings into the fields....

It loses a star for lazy GPX plotting (e.g. dipping into the Trent between Rampton and Torksey viaduct, and too many long straight lines throughout) and another for the amount of unavoidable road walking. From here the GPX line approximately follows the right of way, but most people walk either on or just below the flood barrier until the old ferry lane crosses it, and from there the lane offers a very straight route into Rampton (after rain some dodging around puddles may be needed to stay dryshod)....

I chose to climb the gate into Sundown car park, then follow round to the exit where you can pick up the path behind the glamping site reception/cafe. The field was in use by young bulls, so I followed the road slightly east to a level crossing where you can pick up a byway that rejoins the path at Magpie Lane Farm, although it seems the bank path is blocked here by a derelict outbuilding - perhaps the mower can't safely pass it - so walkers should continue along Magpie Lane and rejoin the footpath just outside North Leverton....

After the there is a stream crossing via two timber planks that have been ;aid over it, no hand rail and too narrow for wheeled access. Another stile follows followed by crossing a field that is normally very rutted and poached by cows, it is not easy going for anyone with mobility issues....
