Description
The first reviewer of RETRAM 1 found its route from Retford to Grove difficult, so this route avoids that problem area, and also passes through South Leverton, where there is a pub (check opening hours if you plan to use it). The middle part of the route is as per RETRAM 1. I walked the route yesterday and this middle section between Grove and South Leverton was the toughest part (mostly due to lack of use rather than deliberate obstruction). Grove Lane is mostly easy to follow but the right of way has been diverted slightly through the wood to keep it further away from the house - the GPX file attempts to show this but I don't have a source for the exact line of the path. I was originally going to use the more direct path north out of Rampton, but it is very hard to spot on the ground

27 Jul 2023Walked from Rampton to Retford. No major issues, though the path from Meetinghouse Lane to Wood Lane is little used which makes it quite hard work to follow. There are good views from the Wood Lane end of this path as it is the highest point for some distance around.
From Rampton church, we go east a short distance along Treswell Road then take the footpath right - there is a sign but it is gradually being swallowed by the hedge. Beyond the houses there should be two paths - the left hand one is easy to follow along the edge of horse fields, but the owners are clearly trying to stop people using the more direct right hand one - one stile was the only remaining trace of it, so I opted for the slightly longer field path and amended the GPX accordingly.
From Laneham Street we follow the lane straight ahead then right. The footpath line could easily be lost as it is left of the track in the trees. The path through the somewhat surreal Sundown Adventureland has stiles and is not well signposted, but is unobstructed, and beyond it we cross another field to reach Cottam Road.
Here we turn left and cross a stream, then take the byway (Rampton Lane) through the fields to South Leverton. We turn left down Town Street, passing the pub, then left again onto Church Street and right onto Meetinghouse Lane, which is almost unused beyond the houses. At a T junction by a wood we turn left along a bridleway, then right on what starts as a clear path. It crosses a field below a farm and then heads left over a stream (no waymarks here!) and follows the edge of the field beyond along the stream and up the hill. Near the corner of the field we cross the hedge (again no waymarks) and continue along the left edges of more fields to Wood Lane.
This road is fairly fast but not busy, and has good verges. Opposite the farm we take the shortcut path left, which crosses three arable fields, all on well cut lines. Eventually we return to the road and follow it into Grove, where there is a pavement, initially on the south side but crossing to the north. Above the church we take the lane right, which leads past farm buildings into the fields. The old lane is still traceable, but fades lower down as we head towards the house at the edge of the wood.
Here the stile is further right than the right of way lane, and leads to a path through the wood that rejoins the old lane at the bottom of the wood below a locked gate. From here we follow the lane through fields and the outer suburbs of Retford until it ends on London Road, where we turn right and follow it into the centre of Retford. The right hand (east) side has fewer side roads to cross - the only significant one being Arlington Way which is crossed using a pelican crossing. Here we go straight on, and the partially pedestrianised Carolgate leads us out to the market place.
