Help connect Prestwich

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Prestwich’s Slow Ways.

Staying on the east side of the River Irwell, the path was generally a good cycle track, with some interesting information about the lowered section of the embankment regarding flood management....

I did enjoy the slow ways. The route was very direct and got me from A to B. The route was very uphill I found so was exhausting by the end! The path is accessible but is on a rather busy road the whole way, however there are traffic light crossing the whole way along. I would recommend this route and is a good alternative to driving....

Walked from Swinton train station up to Clifton and then through the woodlands passed Prestwich Clough. Lovely route, took longer than the stated hour, walking an average pace! No benches if you need a rest. Hilly at times. Nice time of the year for this walk. May 2023...

This is a good enough route. Starting in Whitefield, it's mostly roadside pavement, but there are a few alley ways and through residential areas. As the route leaves the residential area, it follows a path in the woodlands near a golf course, and the path is too close to the golf course. It was muddy in the woodlands and made it a bit challenging to follow the route, but it's for a short distance that leads to a motorway footbridge to Phillips Park. It's easy to navigate the way out of the park and go through a residential area that leads to the Prestwich metro link....

Once we’d diverted slightly around some building works near the Salford end, the route completely changed and became a scenic riverside and woodland trek. Some of the tracks through the wood (I think it’s referred to as “Preswich Clough” on the map) I suspect wouldn’t be as straightforward after heavy rain so good footwear is recommended. Emerged out of the woods into Prestwich with an uphill into the town centre and onwards to the station....

This is a beautiful walk along the river Irwell and then into the woods of Drinkwater Park. There are some access issues at the Salford end as there is a lot of building works. We had to make a diversion around Cromwell Road but when that work is finished access should be restored....

I walked this route from Salford Crescent Train Station to Prestwich Tram Station, then came back a similar route. There are obvious places where the route could be shortened, especially near Salford, but if you aren't in a rush then the route heads across and over some interesting vehicle- and foot-bridges....
