Really enjoyed this relatively short walk. Once we’d diverted slightly around some building works near the Salford end, the route completely changed and became a scenic riverside and woodland trek. Some of the tracks through the wood (I think it’s referred to as “Preswich Clough” on the map) I suspect wouldn’t be as straightforward after heavy rain so good footwear is recommended. Emerged out of the woods into Prestwich with an uphill into the town centre and onwards to the station.

This is a beautiful walk along the river Irwell and then into the woods of Drinkwater Park. There are some access issues at the Salford end as there is a lot of building works. We had to make a diversion around Cromwell Road but when that work is finished access should be restored. There is a narrow gate in the Park and lots of off-road tracks and paths, probably one of the more adventurous Slow Ways.

I walked this route from Salford Crescent Train Station to Prestwich Tram Station, then came back a similar route.

There are obvious places where the route could be shortened, especially near Salford, but if you aren't in a rush then the route heads across and over some interesting vehicle- and foot-bridges.

Near the Casino in Salford the route is inaccurate thanks to a housing estate that has sprung up. Continue along the main road until the roundabout then continue northwards across the River Irwell.

Once you're out of urban Salford the route is pleasant, following the River Irwell. The trail passes through Drinkwater Park which is a fantastic place to stop and explore, it's a beautiful place that would be worthy of being a destination in itself. Continuing through Drinkwater Park you enter Prestwich Clough. It's quite easy to pick the "wrong" trail in here but they all end up in roughly the same place. People with prams and wheelchairs will find it difficult to cross between the parks because of a particularly narrow "gate".

Prestwich is nice, in the vicinity of the Tram Station there are a number of cafes, shops and small supermarkets. A short walk further will take you to Heaton Park, which is also worth a look.

Overall a good route, I would recommend it. Drinkwater Park and Prestwich Clough are a delight but the route needs updating to take new building works into account.
